New York Knicks @ Indiana Pacers
Model Predicts- Pacers ML, OVER 215.5, Knicks +6
The New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers will continue their back-and-forth series on Friday, taking the series back to Indianapolis, Indiana for Game 6.
New York began the series in the drivers seat, protecting home court and going up 2-0 after two games. However, the Pacers would go on to win the next two games when the series shifted to Indy, but that win streak came to an abrupt end after the Knicks claimed a 30-point victory in Game 5 to take a 3-2 series lead.
The Knicks are just one game away from playing in the Eastern Conference Finals, but our model expects the Pacers to win tonight in a high-scoring game. Let’s take a look at why that is.
New York Knicks
Dominated Pacers in Game 5 after getting smoked in Game 4
Game 4- Lost 121-89. Shot 34% from floor overall and 19% from three
Game 5- Won 121-91. Shot 46% overall and 34% from three. Took 101 shot attempts compared to Indiana’s 72
Have struggled defensively on road in postseason
Own 122.1 Defensive Rating in five road games. Has led to 2-3 record
Opponents dominating on perimeter- shooting 40.1% from three while Knicks are the road team. Leading to 112.8 points per game
Injuries- OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, Charlie Brown, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Duane Washington are OUT
Indiana Pacers
Have been dominant on home court in postseason
Own 5-0 record at home in postseason- best record of all playoff teams
Have posted +15.5 Net Rating in those five games- 2nd behind only the Orlando Magic (+24.9)
High-powered offense has been key to success in front of home crowd
125.3 Offensive Rating in five home games (1st among playoff teams). Shooting 50.2% overall and 37.9% from three
Have been even more impressive at home in this series- Shooting splits rise to 52.0% and 41.3% respectively. Averaging 116.3 points per game
Injuries- Benedict Mathurin is OUT
What’s the Play?
The road team has yet to win in this series, and our model believes that trend will continue tonight as it projects the Pacers to win by about five points. However, we are going to back the over in this matchup.
Indiana and New York have thrown defense out the window in the postseason, each posting a Defensive Rating of 117.9 or worse. Those figures rank the Knicks and Pacers 13th and 14th, respectively, out of the 16 postseason teams, and both are nearly 7.0 points behind the next closest team that made it to the second round (Cleveland Cavaliers).
Additionally, Indiana’s offense has erupted while playing in Gainbridge Fieldhouse, posting 119.8 points per game and surpassing the 120-point mark in three of five contests. The Pacers should have no problems reaching a similar number tonight, but they are hard to trust defensively and we could see New York matching that total. Back the over here.
The Play: Over 215.5 (-110)

News Around the League
🐺 Timberwolves rout Nuggets to force Game 7. Anthony Edwards scored 27 points, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a dominant 115-70 victory over the Denver Nuggets, forcing a Game 7 in their playoff series. Jaden McDaniels contributed 21 points and strong defense, while Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Naz Reid combined for 38 rebounds, effectively limiting NBA MVP Nikola Jokic to 22 points. The Nuggets struggled offensively, with Jamal Murray scoring only 10 points and their bench being outscored 36-9, leading to a historic playoff loss by more than 36 points for the defending champions.
😬 Mitchell frustrated with Cavs teammates, questions contract extension. Despite leading the Cavaliers to consecutive playoff appearances, Donovan Mitchell's tenure in Cleveland has been marked by internal friction, with frustrations over teammates' professionalism and preparation for the postseason. Mitchell, who averaged 26.3 points per game this season, missed 27 games due to injuries but was crucial piece to Cleveland’s first round playoff win over the Magic. Mitchell can opt out of his contract at the end of next season, and while there's speculation about a potential extension, if no new deal is reached by the end of the 2024-25 season, the Cavaliers could negotiate a new contract during an exclusive window after the 2025 NBA Finals.

On May 17th…
1979- The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 23-22. Philadelphia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but Chicago would nearly match that run total in the bottom of the first with six runs of its own. Each team scored 22 runs through nine innings, with the Phillies breaking the tie in the top of the tenth inning, and combined for 50 hits and 11 home runs in the game.
1983- The New York Islanders win Game 4 of the 1983 Stanley Cup Final. The Islanders took down the Edmonton Oilers with a four-goal performance, giving New York a clean sweep and the Stanley Cup. The win was also the fourth consecutive Stanley Cup for the Islanders, with Edmonton eventually avenging the loss by winning the title in 1984 and 1985.
1985- Former NFL star Matt Ryan is born in Exton, Pennsylvania. Ryan was selected with the No.3 pick out of Boston College by the Atlanta Falcons, a result of being named a First-Team All-American in his final collegiate season.
