Featured Matchup🎰
Chicago White Sox @ Baltimore Orioles
Model Predicts- Orioles ML, OVER 9, Orioles -1.5
The Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles will continue their three-game series on Tuesday, with the first pitch for Game 2 scheduled to take place at 6:35 PM Eastern.
Baltimore took care of business in Game 1 as a massive favorite, taking down Chicago by a score of 13-3. That win was the second in a row for this Orioles squad, while the loss extended the White Sox losing streak to a lengthy 11 games.
Baltimore didn’t face much resistance after the first inning on Monday, and our model doesn’t project today’s matchup to be difficult for the Orioles either. Let’s dive into why that is.
Chicago White Sox
Enter today on 11-game losing streak
Four losses to Tigers, three losses to Rangers, three losses to Mets, and one loss to Orioles
Own -42 run differential in that span
Sub-par pitching staff has played large role in recent struggles
Rank 29th in ERA (5.97), 21st in xFIP (4.33), and 16th in HR/9 innings (1.29)
67 runs allowed is second-most in MLB since August 23rd. 14 home runs ranks in bottom 10
Starting pitcher- Nick Nastrini
Due for slight positive regression, but still expected to struggle- 7.04 ERA vs 6.59 xERA
Poor command and high rate of contact- 18.1% Walk rate and 15.3% Strikeout rate
Baltimore Orioles
Beat Chicago in dominant fashion yesterday
Down 2-1 after first inning, but won 13-3
Recorded 18 hits and seven walks in the game
Have now won three of last four games thanks to offense
Own 154 wRC+, .355 BABIP, and .892 OPS in last four games
Batting .302 as a team- has led to 7.25 runs per game and +15 run differential in that time
Starting pitcher- Cade Povich
Due for positive regression- 6.58 ERA vs 4.45 xERA
Also struggles with command and strikeouts- 10.6% Walk rate and 15.1% Strikeout rate
What’s the Play?
Game 1 of this series saw a total of 16 runs scored. It’s unlikely we see a total that high on back-to-back days, but we do agree with our model that the White Sox and Orioles can combine for at least 10 runs tonight and hit the over.
Nastrini and Povich are both due for some positive regression, but their flaws on the mound make that very difficult. Both pitchers have struggled with their command this season, posting a Walk rate higher than 10.0%, and neither one has been able to strikeout opposing hitters.
Opposing hitters are often getting on base via the walk when either guy is on the mound, and the abundance of contact is not good contact, as both Nastrini and Povich own a Barrel rate higher than 10.0% and Ground Ball rate lower than 36.5%.
The Orioles should have no problems piling runs on today, and even though the White Sox are one of the worst offensive teams in the MLB, we agree with our model’s projection that scoring three runs with Povich on the mound is in the realm of possibility. As a result, we’ll back the over here.
The Play: Over 9 (+100)

News Around the League
💪 Yu Darvish set to return to mound on Wednesday. San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt announced that Yu Darvish will return to the mound on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers after being sidelined since May 29 due to injuries and personal matters. Darvish, who recently completed his rehab for an elbow issue, brings a 3.20 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings this season. His return strengthens the Padres' rotation as they push for a playoff spot, as team sits in first place in the NL Wild Card race with a 79-61 record.
⚾️ Dodgers dominate Diamondbacks on Monday to win series. Freddie Freeman hit two home runs with five RBIs, and Shohei Ohtani stole three bases as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-6, taking three of four games in their series. The Dodgers, now with a six-game lead in the NL West, have won 17 of their last 23 games, while Arizona and San Diego are battling for second place. The Diamondbacks struggled with pitching, giving up 32 runs in the series, as Eduardo Rodriguez endured a tough outing, and their homestand ended with a disappointing 2-5 record.

On This Day in History🗓

Milwaukee Bucks legend Oscar Robertson (NBA.com)
Anyone know what has happened on September 3rd throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.
On September 3rd…
1974- Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson retires from the NBA. Robertson is widely regarded as one of the most well-rounded players to ever pick up a basketball, as evidenced by his 181 career triple-doubles. Robertson would leave the NBA with 26,710 points, 7,804 rebounds, and 9,887 assists, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame six years after his retirement in 1980.
1995- The Jacksonville Jaguars make their NFL debut against the Houston Oilers. Jacksonville, led by quarterback Steve Beuerlein, tallied just 146 total yards of offense in the game, resulting in just 2.4 yards per play. The nonexistent offense led to just three total points, foreshadowing what would later turn into a 4-12 season.
2001- St. Louis Cardinals rookie Bud Smith throws a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the San Diego Padres. The no-no came in what was just Smith’s 11th career start, a game in which he threw 134 pitches, striking out seven opposing hitters and walking four. Despite the hot start to his career, Smith would be traded in 2002 to the Philadelphia Phillies and eventually signed with the Minnesota Twins in 2004, but failed to make another start in the big leagues afterwards.
