Today’s Model Predictions

Nine NHL games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all nine matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Edmonton Oilers @ Boston Bruins
Model Predicts- Oilers ML, UNDER 6.5, Bruins +1.5

The Edmonton Oilers will begin a four-game road trip on Tuesday, with the first stop coming in Boston, Massachusetts to take on the Bruins.

Edmonton enters tonight’s battle red hot, picking up a win in each of the last four games to push the team’s record to 37-20-2. Meanwhile, Boston is just 4-2-4 in its last ten games following a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.

Both of these teams are looking to stay in the win column after recent wins, but our model believes Edmonton will be the team to do so. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Edmonton Oilers
  • Enter tonight on four-game win streak

    • Wins over Kings, Blues, Kraken, and Penguins

    • +9 goal differential in that time

  • Own high-powered offense should continue to get better

    • Rank 1st in xGF/60 in 5-on-5 situations- 1st in NHL and 0.39 goals higher than GF/60 in same situations

    • Rank 1st in high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes (HDCF/60) in 5-on-5 with

  • Expected goalie- Stuart Skinner

    • Owns .914 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 53rd in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with -0.1

Boston Bruins
  • Beat Maple Leafs on Monday

    • Won 4-1. Were out-shot 33-30 by Toronto

    • Only second win in last six games

  • Defense is struggling during losing skid

    • Rank in bottom 11 in xGA/60 (2.61) and high-danger chances against per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in 5-on-5 in last six games

  • Expected goalie- Linus Ullmark

    • Owns .925 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 12th in GSAx (+9.4)

What’s the Play?

Boston got back on the right track last night, but we agree with our model that this is a solid spot to back Edmonton on the road.

Boston is in the midst of a brutal schedule, on that has seen the Bruins play seven games in the last 13 days, six of which have come on the road. It may be refreshing to return to their home ice after a two-game road trip, but Boston is just 1-0-2 in its last three back-to-back sets, with every game going into overtime.

Ullmark is a great option to have in net here, but a struggling Bruins defense has a tall task on its hands trying to keep up with this elite Oilers offense on short rest. As a result, we’ll take the Oilers.

The Play: Oilers ML (-120)

News Around the League

😬 Devils make new changes to coaching staff. The New Jersey Devils dismissed head coach Lindy Ruff after a challenging season, appointing Travis Green as interim head coach for the remainder of the year. Ruff, in his fourth season with the team, led them to a playoff berth in 2023 but struggled this season, with goaltending and injuries affecting performance. General Manager Tom Fitzgerald expressed the need for accountability and competitiveness, acknowledging the difficult decision to part ways with Ruff, who was praised for his coaching and personal qualities despite fan criticism.

👀 Several teams have their eyes on Tarasenko. Several Stanley Cup contenders are interested in Ottawa Senators winger Vladimir Tarasenko, including the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Edmonton Oilers. Ottawa is looking for a second-round pick and a prospect in exchange for the pending unrestricted free agent, who has a $5 million cap hit and control over his situation with a no-trade clause. Tarasenko, who has 17 goals and 41 points in 57 games this season, has expressed enjoyment in Ottawa but is considering all options as the Senators sit in last place in their division with minimal playoff hopes.

Anyone know what has happened on March 5th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On March 5th…

1982- MLB pitcher Gaylord Perry signs with the Seattle Mariners. Perry signed with Seattle at the age of 43, which came after a season in which he posted an 8-9 record and 3.94 ERA the season prior with the Atlanta Braves. He would play just two season’s with the Mariners, posting a 13-22 record across 35 starts.

He would end his career with 573 goals, ranking him 22nd in NHL history.

1993- MLB slugger Kyle Schwarber is born in Middeltown, Ohio.
