Featured Matchup🎰

Philadelphia Phillies @ Colorado Rockies
Model Predicts- Phillies ML, UNDER 11, Phillies -1.5

The Philadelphia Phillies will begin a six-game road trip on Friday night, with the first leg of the trip being at Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies.

Philadelphia has dominated just about every team it has crossed paths with in recent days, as evidenced by the team’s 6-0 record in the last six games. The Phillies are now 37-14 for the season and own the best record in baseball, while Colorado has won just 16 of its first 49 games of the 2024 season.

The talent gap between these two squads is sizable, and as a result our model projects Philadelphia to win this game by several runs. Let’s dive into why that is.

Philadelphia Phillies
  • Enter series with Rockies on six-game win streak

    • Swept the Nationals last weekend, swept Ranger this week

    • Now 9-1 in last 10 games

  • Offense has been amongst league’s best during win streak

    • Own 127 wRC+, .806 OPS, and 16.9% strikeout rate in last six games. Rank in top-six of MLB in all three categories

    • Getting on base via walks in addition to hits- 11.0% walk rate in last 10 games ranks first in MLB

  • Starting pitcher- Cristopher Sanchez

    • Performing near expectations- 3.31 ERA vs 3.73 xERA

    • Elite ground ball pitcher- 62.6% ground ball rate ranks in top 3% of MLB this season

Colorado Rockies
  • Enter tonight in big slump

    • Own 1-5 record in the last six games. Losses to Giants and Athletics

    • -19 run differential in last six games

  • Offense is struggling to get things going as of late

    • 86 wRC+, .281 BABIP, and 20.5% strikeout rate in last six games

    • Has been case for most of season- rank 29th in wRC+, 26th in strikeout rate, and 22nd in runs scored

  • Starting pitcher- Ty Blach

    • Got hit around last time out- Allowed seven hits and six runs in just 3.0 innings vs Giants

    • Hitters making tons of contact while on mound- Ranks in bottom 1% of MLB in strikeout rate (11.4%) and Whiff rate (11.7%)

What’s the Play?

Normally we stay away from backing favorites on the run line, but we agree with our model that this is a good spot to back Philadelphia to win by multiple runs.

Ty Blach is oftentimes pitching to contact, and so far it has not worked out. Blach owns a 5.14 ERA this season, and his xERA is slightly higher at 5.44, both of which show that opposing teams have done significant damage while he is on the mound. That is bad news when facing this Phillies lineup, as the group has proven to be a force at the plate and has averaged 6.67 runs per game during their six-game win streak.

Cristopher Sanchez is a middle-of-the-road pitcher when it comes to strikeouts as well, but his ability to keep baseballs on the ground has shut down many opponents this season, and we shouldn’t expect anything different against one of the worst hitting teams in baseball. Back the Phillies on the run line here.

The Play: Phillies -1.5 (-130)

News Around the League

😬 White Sox rally late, but lose to Orioles due to interference call. The Baltimore Orioles secured an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox, with a controversial call ending the game. The White Sox rallied with four runs in the ninth inning and had runners on base when Andrew Benintendi's infield pop-up resulted in a disputed interference call against Andrew Vaughn. White Sox manager Pedro Grifol disagreed with the ruling, but the call was later confirmed, handing Chicago its 36th loss in 51 games.

🤖 MLB holds meeting to discuss multiple topics, including Robot umpires. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that robot umpires are unlikely for the 2025 season due to technical issues and slower-than-expected progress in the minor leagues. MLB has been experimenting with the automated ball-strike system since 2019, with mixed results, and players show a preference for a challenge system to preserve the art of catcher framing. Additionally, MLB plans to address uniform issues raised by Nike and announced the host cities for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, while also working with Rawlings on developing a tackier baseball.
