Today’s Model Predictions

13 NHL games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all 13 matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

San Jose Sharks @ Detroit Red Wings
Model Predicts- Red Wings ML, UNDER 6.5, Sharks +1.5

The San Jose Sharks will begin a five-game road trip on Tuesday, with the first stop coming in Detroit, Michigan to take on the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

San Jose enters tonight’s matchup in the midst of a slump, one that has seen the Sharks lose three-consecutive games. That stretch has brought the Sharks’ record to 13-26-6 for the season, while the Red Wings sit at 20-18-4 after winning seven-consecutive games.

The Sharks and Red Wings are trending in opposite directions in the standings, and our model projects that to remain the case tonight as it expects the Red Wings to win in a low-scoring game. Let’s dive into why that is.

San Jose Sharks
  • Enter tonight on three-game losing streak

    • Losses to Golden Knights, Hockey Club, and Wild

    • Own -5 goal differential in that span

  • Offense has been non-existent during losing streak

    • Have scored 0.72 goals per 60 minutes (GF/60) in 5-on-5 situations across last three games (30th in NHL in that span)

    • Have been held to 21 shots on goal or fewer in two of three games

  • Expected goalie- Yaroslav Askarov

    • Owns .927 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 26th in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +4.1

Detroit Red Wings
  • Enter tonight on seven-game win streak

    • Wins over Capitals, Penguins, Blue Jackets, Jets, Senators, Blackhawks, and Kraken

    • Own +14 goal differential in that span

  • Offense has been significantly over-performing during win streak

    • Rank sixth in GF/60 in 5-on-5 situations since December 29th with 2.59

    • However, xGF/60 in same situations sits at 2.11, showing offense is scoring more goals than expected

  • Expected goalie- Cam Talbot

    • Owns .935 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 34th in GSAx (+2.3)

What’s the Play?

The total for tonight’s matchup sits at 6.5 goals, but our model projects roughly six goals to be scored. As a result, we’ll be backing the under in this spot.

Several underlying metrics show San Jose and Detroit are in the midst of offensive struggles, which includes failing to put pressure on opposing goaltenders. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Sharks and Red Wings each rank in the bottom-seven in High-Danger Scoring Chances per 60 minutes (HDCF/60) in 5-on-5 situations since December 29th, and that lack of pressure has translated to very few expected goals.

Additionally, Cam Talbot and Yaroslav Askarov have each been stellar in net this season, ranking inside the top-17 in Save %. Both present a great last line of defense for their respective squads.

In summary, neither offense produces enough pressure on net to score in bunches, and each possesses a strong goaltender to keep goals out. As a result, we’ll back the under.

The Play: Under 6.5 (-120)

News Around the League

💪 Skinner dominates in net to lead Oilers to second-consecutive win. Connor McDavid scored in the second period to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, securing their second consecutive win and moving into second place in the Pacific Division. Stuart Skinner recorded his second shutout of the season with 31 saves, while Darcy Kuemper stopped 29 shots for the Kings, who have now lost two straight after a five-game winning streak. McDavid celebrated his 28th birthday by tying Steve Yzerman for third-most NHL points before age 28, while the Oilers solidified their strong form with a league-best record since late November.

👋 Pospisil ejected for boarding in win vs Blackhawks. Flames forward Martin Pospisil was ejected for boarding Taylor Hall during Calgary's 5-2 win over the Blackhawks, an incident that occurred midway through the second period and led to a major penalty. Although Connor Bedard scored on the resulting power play, Yegor Sharangovich quickly countered with a shorthanded goal for Calgary. Pospisil, known for his physical play and history of suspensions, entered the game with 10 goals, 36 points, and 160 penalty minutes in 104 career NHL games.

Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on January 14th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On January 14th…

1982- MLB legend Hank Aaron is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Aaron spent 23 seasons in the MLB, 21 with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and two with the Milwaukee Brewers. He would retire from baseball following the 1976 season, setting several power hitting records before that year.

2001- The Atlanta Hawks retire Dominique Wilkins’ No. 21 jersey. He joined Bob Pettit and Lou Hudson in the rafters as the the third Hawk to have his number retired. Wilkins played for Atlanta from 1982-1994, becoming an All-Star nine times in that stretch.

2024- Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions defeat the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL playoffs. Detroit won the game by a score of 24-23, with 21 of the Lions’ 24 points coming in the first half. It was the first playoff win for the Lions since 1991, and they would end up reaching the NFC Championship later in the postseason.
