Today’s Model Predictions

There are 10 NHL games scheduled to take place today, and unfortunately those are the only professional sports games at our disposal. You can see our model’s predictions for all 10 matchups below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Philadelphia Flyers @ San Jose Sharks
Model Predicts- Flyers ML, OVER 6.5, Sharks +1.5

The Philadelphia Flyers will begin a four-game road trip on Tuesday, starting with a stop in San Jose to take on the Sharks.

Philadelphia enters tonight’s matchup with a 5-6-1 record, but has remained competitive despite not picking up many wins. On the other hand, San Jose doesn’t even appear to be putting a team on the ice most nights, posting an 0-10-1 record through 11 games.

The Sharks are off to a historically bad start, and one more loss would set an NHL record for the most consecutive losses to begin a season. Our model believes San Jose will own that record at the conclusion of tonight’s game, so let’s take a look at why that is.

Philadelphia Flyers
  • Middle-of-the-road team on offense

    • Rank 15th in xGF/60, 12th in HDCF/60 in 5-on-5 situations

    • Average 31.4 shots on goal per game. 29th ranked power play in NHL

  • Defense has stepped, but weak goaltending has been issue

    • Rank 24th in GA/60 in 5-on-5, while xGA/60 sits at 2.30

    • Goalies Carter Hart and Samuel Ersson both own a GSAx below 0

  • Expected goalie- Samuel Ersson

    • .838 Save % in 5-on-5 situations

    • 3.90 Goals Allowed Average

    • Ranks 69th out of 71 in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with -6.3

San Jose Sharks
  • Slowly becoming the worst hockey team of all-time

    • Have yet to win game this season

    • Have lost 10 of 11 games by two goals or more

  • Defense is nonexistent

    • Rank 32nd in GA/60 in 5-on-5 with 4.13. Next closest team is at 3.44 (Natural Stat Trick)

    • Surrender 16.29 High-Danger Scoring Chances per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in 5-on-5 situations

  • Expected goalie- Mackenzie Blackwood

    • .892 Save % and .754 High-Danger Save % in 5-on-5

    • Ranks 62nd in GSAx (-3.6)

What’s the Play?

Neither one of these offenses is lethal, but the guys guarding twine tonight have proven that they can’t stop enough pucks to keep this a low scoring game. As a result, we will back the over here.

This Sharks team has scored just 12 goals this season, which is obviously not great for an over. However, they have simultaneously surrendered 55, including allowing 10 goals in each of their last two games.

Blackwood is a massive liability in net, allowing 12 goals on the last 73 shot attempts he has faced, and Samuel Ersson has allowed five goals or more in two of his four appearances this season.

This is likely a blowout win for the the Flyers, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see them reach the over themselves.

The Play: Over 6.5 (-120)

On This Day in History🗓

Hall of Fame pitcher Roy Halladay (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on November 7th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On November 7th…

1963- New York Yankees catcher Elston Howard is the first African-American to be voted AL MVP. Unsurprisingly, the 1963 season was the best of Howard’s career, ending the year with 28 homers, 85 RBIs, and striking out just 68 times in 487 at-bats. Howard would end his career as a 12-time All-Star and six-time World Series Champ, and would become a coach for the Yankees shortly after his retirement in 1968.

1989- Baltimore Orioles pitcher Gregg Olson becomes the first reliever in MLB history to win Rookie of the Year. His first year in the majors was certainly historic, ending with Olson posting a 1.69 ERA and 27 saves. He would end his 14-year career with 217 saves, which is still Baltimore’s franchise record today.

2017- Former MLB pitcher Roy Halladay passes away as a result of a plane crash. Halladay was one of the most dominant pitchers throughout the 2000s, becoming an eight-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner. His baseball success would be immortalized shortly after his death, as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019.
