Today’s Model Predictions

Due to no games being scheduled for Thanksgiving day, the NBA stuffed 14 games into today’s slate. Our model’s predictions for all 14 matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Sacramento Kings @ New Orleans Pelicans
Model Predicts- Kings ML, UNDER 236.5, Kings -2

The Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans will square off for the second time this week on Wednesday night.

Sacramento came up well short of a victory in the first meeting with New Orleans on Monday, suffering a brutal 129-93 defeat. However, the Kings still own an 8-5 record and sit in fifth in the Western Conference, while New Orleans is just 7-7 through its first 14 games of the regular season.

Monday’s matchup was far from pretty, but our model still believes the Kings are the better team and will bounce back today. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Sacramento Kings
  • Couldn’t do anything right in Monday’s loss

    • Scored 93 points. Shot 38% overall and 24% from three

    • Outscored 64-40 in the paint

  • Still winners of six of last seven games

    • +3.6 Net Rating in that stretch

    • Averaging 119.91 points per game on 48.8% shooting

  • Injuries are beginning to pop up

    • Six players listed on injury report- Keegan Murray is most impactful one

New Orleans Pelicans
  • Still without C.J. McCollum (collapsed lung)

    • Larry Nance, Trey Murphy, Matt Ryan, and E.J. Liddell also on injury report

  • Have gone 3-5 in eight games without McCollum, but have played well

    • Shooting 49.4% overall and 40.5% from three (NBA.com)

    • +1.6 Net Rating without McCollum, -3.0 with him

  • Have been great defensively all season

What’s the Play?

The Pelicans have put up solid numbers without McCollum, but it hasn’t translated to many wins. Of course that wasn’t the case with the beatdown they gave Sacramento on Monday, but we agree with our model that the Kings are due to find the win column tonight.

Monday’s game was a tough spot for the Kings. It was the second game in two nights and the fourth game of six-game road trip, so fatigue was playing a large role. Prior to that loss the Kings were 3-0 with a +40 point differential on the road trip, which is a better reflection of how this team has played.

The Kings are the better team, and we shouldn’t let Monday’s blowout cloud our brain.

The Play: Kings -2 (-110)

Today’s Model Predictions

After taking a day off yesterday, the NHL is back today in a massive way, with 14 games on the docket. Our model’s predictions for all 14 matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

New Jersey Devils @ Detroit Red Wings
Model Predicts- Red Wings ML, OVER 6.5, Red Wings +1.5

The New Jersey Devils will hit the road for just one game on Wednesday, making a stop in Detroit to take on the Red Wings.

New Jersey enters tonight’s matchup with an 8-7-1 record, a result of losing four of the last five games. The Devils now sit in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, and Detroit is in a similar position, sitting in fifth in the Atlantic with an 8-6-3 record.

Surprisingly, our model believes that Detroit will win this game as a home underdog, but we are more concerned with the total in this spot. Let’s dive into why that is.

New Jersey Devils
  • Have hit a rough patch in season

    • Timo Meier and Nico Hischier are out due to injury

    • 1-4 record and -7 goal differential in last five games

  • Poor defense has been cause for recent slump

    • Rank 28th in GA/60 in 5-on-5 situations (3.12) this season. Has risen to 3.54 in last five games

    • Surrendering 13.40 high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in 5-on-5 in same five-game stretch

  • Expected goalie- Vitek Vanecek

    • .893 Save % and .719 High-Danger Save % in 5-on-5 (Natural Stat Trick)

    • Ranks 62nd in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with -3.8

Detroit Red Wings
  • One of more electric scoring attacks in NHL

    • Rank third in GF/60 in 5-on-5 (3.32). Averaging 3.50 goals per game over last six contests

  • Defense has been been bad and is due to get worse

    • GA/60 in 5-on-5 sits at 2.62, but xGA/60 in same situations is 2.75

  • Expected goalie- Alex Lyon

    • .909 Save % and .818 High-Danger Save % in 5-on-5 in one start this season

What’s the Play?

Defense hasn’t been New Jersey’s or Detroit’s strong suit this season, and as a result we will go with the over here.

Detroit’s offense has found the back of the net often, but New Jersey is actually the better group on that end of the ice. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Devils rank third in xGF/60 in 5-on-5 situations, and generate the second-most high-danger scoring chance per 60 minutes in the same situations with 14.2.

Vanecek and Lyon both aren’t very strong in net either, especially when their opponent is near the crease. That will open up the floodgates for scoring tonight.

The Play: Over 6.5 (-135)

News Around the League

😬 Lucic pleads not guilty to domestic violence allegations. Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic was arrested and charged following an alleged domestic incident earlier this week. More details of the incident emerged on Monday, suggesting that a 911 call reported Lucic trying to choke his wife during a verbal altercation turned physical. Appearing in court on Tuesday, Lucic pleaded not guilty to assault and battery against a family member, and a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 19, as per the police report obtained by the Boston Globe.

🤕 Severson out six weeks with oblique injury. Blue Jackets defenseman Damon Severson has reportedly sustained an oblique injury, likely sidelining him for six weeks. This will extend his absence beyond the New Year, following an incident during the team's recent loss where Severson left the game in the second period after diving to maintain offensive pressure. Severson, averaging nearly 21 minutes of ice time per game with eight points in 19 games, will be a significant absence for a team in the midst of a nine-game losing streak.

On This Day in History🗓

New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing (NBA.com)

Anyone know what has happened on November 22nd throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On November 22nd…

1961- St. Louis Hawks forward Bob Pettit sets the NBA free throw record, going 19 for 19 in a single game. Free throws were Pettit’s specialty, as 6,182 of his 20,880 career points came from the charity stripe. However, he displayed his scoring dominance in a multitude of ways, averaging 26.4 points per game across his 11-year career.

1986- NHL legend Wayne Gretzky scores his 500th career goal. The milestone goal came in a victory over the Vancouver Canucks, where he put the puck in an empty net at the end of the game, recording a hat trick in process. Gretzky would end his career with 894 goals, which remains the most in NHL history.

1991- Patrick Ewing signs a record-breaking two-year extension with the New York Knicks. Ewing signed the extension despite having four years left on his current contract, with that extension paying him $9.4 million per year. The extension was the largest of any American professional sports player at the time, surpassing Roger Clemens, Dan Marino, and Wayne Gretzky.
