Today’s Model Predictions

The NBA experiences a slowdown following yesterday’s tournament games, with just seven games making the docket today. Our model’s predictions for all seven matchups are below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Phoenix Suns @ Toronto Raptors
Model Predicts- Suns ML, OVER 222.5, Suns -2

The Phoenix Suns will close out a three-game road trip on Wednesday, with the final stop of their journey coming north of the U.S. border in Toronto, Canada to take on the Raptors.

Phoenix’s roadtrip has been quite friendly, seeing the Suns post a perfect 2-0 record. Phoenix is now 7-0 in its last seven games, and enters today in third place in the Western Conference with an 11-6 record. Meanwhile, the Raptors sit in 11th in the East following a 12-point loss last night to the Brooklyn Nets.

Several key players, including Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, have missed the last several games for Phoenix, but the Suns have still found ways to pick up wins, and our model believes they will do so again tonight. Let’s dive into why that is.

Phoenix Suns
  • Have gone 7-0 in last seven games

    • Own +10.5 Net Rating in that time- 3rd in NBA

    • Best wins came against Timberwolves and Knicks

  • Offense has been elite in last 7 games, but defense has looked vulnerable

    • 128.4 Offensive Rating (1st), 117.9 Defensive Rating (22nd)

    • Lacking scoring depth- All starters above 11 points per game, no other player above 8.0

  • Dealing with multiple injuries

    • Bradley Beal, Nassir Little are Out, Kevin Durant, Grayson Allen are questionable

Toronto Raptors
  • Suffered loss to Brooklyn Nets last night

    • Scored 103 points. Shot poor 39% overall, 36% from three, and 63% from free throw line

  • Have struggled in back-to-back scenarios

    • 1-2 in second leg of back-to-back

    • Losing by average of 7 points per game

  • Have now gone 4-6 in last ten games

What’s the Play?

Neither Phoenix nor Toronto has been reliable on the defensive end lately, and as a result we are rolling with the over in tonight’s matchup.

Toronto’s success on the back end of a back-to-back has been faint, and that has often led to high-scoring contests. We’ve seen the average point total in those scenarios reach 232.3, with Toronto’s opponent scoring 119.7 points per game on average. Phoenix should face little resistance tonight, resulting in points even if Durant misses another game.

However, Toronto will be in a position to match Phoenix’s offensive output, as the Suns have played surprisingly poorly on the defensive end during their seven-game win streak. Expect a high-scoring contest here.

The Play: Over 222.5 (-110)

News Around the League

💰 Mark Cuban to sell majority stake in Mavericks. The Adelson family is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire a significant stake in the Dallas Mavericks, as per sources familiar with the matter. Under this potential agreement, Mark Cuban would retain his position as the team's governor, maintaining control over all basketball-related decisions. The deal is estimated to fall within a valuation range of $3.5 billion and is expected to undergo a weeks-long processing period by the league.

🤕 Ball to miss extended time with ankle sprain. Hornets' standout guard LaMelo Ball is anticipated to be absent from play for multiple weeks due to a right ankle sprain. Hornets coach Steve Clifford labeled the injury as "frustrating", given it happened just one quarter into a recent game where Charlotte finally fielded its anticipated starting lineup after a long span. Ball had been showcasing impressive numbers this season, averaging a career-high 24.7 points, along with 5.5 rebounds, 8.2 assists, and 1.4 steals across 15 games.

Today’s Model Predictions

A slow day of NHL hockey will take place today, with just six teams scheduled to hit the ice. Our model’s predictions can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Washington Capitals @ Los Angeles Kings
Model Predicts- Capitals ML, UNDER 6, Capitals +1.5

The Washington Capitals will continue their West Coast road trip on Wednesday, with their next stop coming in Los Angeles to take on the Kings.

The start of Washington’s road trip could not have gone any worse, as the Capitals suffered a 2-1 loss to the lowly San Jose Sharks. Washington now owns a 10-6-2 record, while the Kings enter today at 13-3-2 and on a five-game win streak.

Los Angeles certainly has the upper hand in tonight’s battle but our model is predicting a tightly contested, low-scoring contest. Let’s dive into why that is.

Washington Capitals
  • One of worst offensive units in league

    • Rank 31st in GF/60 in 5-on-5 situations (1.95)

    • Worst power play in NHL- score on just 5.7% of power plays

  • Lack of goals comes from lack of pressure on opposing goaltenders

    • Generate 10.08 high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes (HDCF/60) in 5-on-5

    • Rank 26th in shots on goal per game

  • Expected goalie- Darcy Kuemper

    • .899 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 43rd in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +0.2

Los Angeles Kings
  • Scoring at high clip, but due for significant regression

    • Rank 1st in GF/60 in 5-on-5 (3.48)

    • However, xGF/60 in same situations is much lower (3.00)

  • Elite defensive team

    • Rank 1st in xGA/60 and high-danger chances against per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in 5-on-5 situations

    • Kill 89.4% of power plays (1st), allow 4th fewest shots on goal per game

  • Expected goalie- Cam Talbot

    • .929 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 4th in GSAx (+8.1)

What’s the Play?

The Capitals are right next to the Sharks when it comes to being the most offensively-challenged team in the NHL, and we agree with our model that will be the catalyst for a low-scoring game.

Washington’s inability to generate pressure on net is eye-opening, and that likely won’t change today against a Kings defense that allows the fewest high-danger chances in 5-on-5 this season. Even if Washington finds a way to cause chaos near the crease, it likely won’t lead to goals, as Washington is putting just 8% of its shot attempts in the back of the net this season.

Los Angeles has been the most well-rounded team this season, and will likely find the back of Washington’s net several times. However, they will do enough to keep the Caps off the board tonight, and in turn give us a low-scoring game.

The Play: Under 6 (-110)

News Around the League

🔄 Canucks trade Beavillier to Chicago. The Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks confirmed on Tuesday a trade involving forward Anthony Beauvillier for a 2024 fifth-round pick. Beauvillier, who has tallied two goals and eight points in 22 games this season, was in the final year of his contract, allowing the Canucks to clear $4.15 million in cap space with no salary retained in the deal. Originally obtained by Vancouver in the Bo Horvat trade from the New York Islanders, Beauvillier amassed 11 goals and 28 points in 55 games with the Canucks.

😬 Blackhawks terminate Corey Perry’s contract. The circumstances surrounding Corey Perry's unexpected absence from the Chicago Blackhawks remain undisclosed, generating speculation and rumors on social media. Perry was placed on waivers by the team as they plan to terminate his contract, citing conduct that violated his contract terms and the team's internal policies promoting a professional and safe workplace. As a result, Perry's tenure with the Blackhawks ends abruptly, concluding with four goals and nine points in 16 games after signing a one-year, $4-million contract with the team in June.

On This Day in History🗓

NFL legend Joe Montana (Otto Greule/Allsport)

Anyone know what has happened on November 29th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On November 29th…

1976- The New York Yankees sign MLB legend Reggie Jackson to a five-year contract. The contract came following a one-year stint with the Baltimore Orioles, netting him $2.96 million. He would play for the Yankees until 1981, helping New York to two World Series titles in that time.

1987- Joe Montana sets a new NFL record for consecutive completions. Montana set the record by completing 22 straight passes, a record set in the same season he would post a stellar 102.1 passer rating. His record has since been broken by four players, with Ryan Tannehill, Marcus Mariota, Nick Foles, and Phillip Rivers all completing 25 consecutive passes.

1987- The New Orleans Saints go on the road and defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-16. On the surface it was just another regular season win, but the victory meant that the Saints would post their first winning season since joining the league in 1967. New Orleans has since posted 16 additional winning seasons, which included a 13-3 season in 2010 when they won the Super Bowl.
