Featured Matchup🎰

Oakland Athletics @ San Francisco Giants
Model Predicts- Giants ML, OVER 8, Athletics +1.5

The Oakland Athletics will continue their six-game road trip on Tuesday night, with the next stop coming in San Francisco, California to take on the Giants.

Oakland’s road trip got off to a great start over the weekend, as the Athletics emerged victorious in three of four games against the Los Angeles Angels. As a result, the A’s are a stellar 7-3 in their last ten games, and the Giants are just as hot, entering tonight’s matchup on a four-game winning streak.

Both Oakland and San Francisco have found the win column often recently, but our model projects the Giants to be the team that stays hot tonight in a high-scoring contest. Let’s dive into why that is.

Oakland Athletics
  • Enter tonight as one of hotter teams in MLB

    • Own 7-3 record in last ten games- five wins over Angels, two wins over Astros

    • +18 run differential in that span

  • Offense has carried team to recent victories

    • Rank 3rd in wRC+ (140), 11th in BABIP (.307), and 3rd in OPS (.842) since July 19th

    • 59 runs scored and 16 home runs since July 19th both rank in top-seven in MLB

  • Starting pitcher- JP Sears

    • Pitching to expectations- 4.81 ERA vs 4.75 xERA

    • Pitching to contact- Ranks in bottom 13% of MLB in strikeout rate (17.1%), bottom 22% in Whiff rate (21.7%)

San Francisco Giants
  • Enter tonight on four-game win streak

    • All four wins came against Rockies at home

    • +16 run differential. Averaged 6.25 runs per game

  • Offense has been just as hot as Oakland’s since All-Star break

    • Rank 8th in wRC+ (122), 6th in BABIP (.315), and 10th in OPS (.779)

    • Have hit 13 home runs and scored 50 runs across last 11 games

  • Starting pitcher- Robbie Ray

    • Making second start of season

    • Allowed one earned run and struck out eight batters in first start of season vs Dodgers

What’s the Play?

It is difficult to pick a side in this matchup due to both offenses being amongst the best in the MLB since the All-Star break, but we agree with our model that this is a prime spot to back the over.

Both Sears and Ray have shown some vulnerabilities to barrel contact this season, albeit across just five innings for Ray. Sears ranks in the bottom 10% of the MLB this season in that category at 10.4%, while Ray saw his Barrel rate come in at 14.3% in his lone start of the season. That is a big flaw for both of these guys, and it is one that two heavy-hitting teams can take advantage of.

Additionally, Sears and Ray are both left-handed, which works in the A’s and Giants’ favor here. Per FanGraphs, the Giants rank 4th in wRC+ (163) against left-handers since the All-Star break, and the Athletics aren’t far behind in sixth at 146.

Everything is clicking for both teams at the plate, and there are several factors in play today that support that offensive success to continue. We’ll back the over here.

The Play: Over 8 (+100)

News Around the League

🔄 Lane Thomas traded to Guardians for three prospects. The Washington Nationals traded outfielder Lane Thomas to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for left-handed pitcher Alex Clemmey, shortstop Rafael Ramirez, and third baseman José Tena. Thomas, who has been productive with a .253 average and 28 stolen bases this season, will add to the Guardians' lineup alongside stars like José Ramírez. The traded players include Clemmey, a top prospect with a strong strikeout rate, Ramirez, a young shortstop with potential, and Tena, who has performed well in Triple-A.

💪 Baltimore’s McCann stays in game after being hit in face with fastball. Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann showed remarkable toughness by catching the entire first game of a doubleheader after being hit in the face by a 95-mph fastball in the first inning. Despite the injury, which likely resulted in a broken nose, McCann stayed in the game and helped lead the Orioles to an 11-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. His resilience impressed his teammates, with pitcher Zach Eflin praising McCann's leadership and expressing admiration for his determination.

On This Day in History🗓

Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on July 30th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On July 30th…

1973- Texas Rangers pitcher Jim Bibby throws a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics. Texas won the game by a score of 6-0, with Bibby recording 13 strikeouts and six walks across nine innings. The no-hitter was the first for Bibby in his career, and the first in Texas Rangers history.

1978- The Montreal Expos defeat the Atlanta Braves 19-0. Montreal recorded 28 hits and eight home runs in the rout, with the home run total becoming a National League record in a single game. However, the dominant performance wasn’t reflective of the Expos’ season, as the team ended the year with a 76-86 record.

1996- Tommy Lasorda retires as manager from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lasorda began his managerial career with the Dodgers in 1976, and it came after spending some time as a coach for the team beginning in 1973. Lasorda would end his career with 1,599 wins, which currently ranks him 23rd on the MLB’s all-time list.
