Featured Matchup🎰
Los Angeles Angels @ Kansas City Royals
Model Predicts- Royals ML, OVER 9, Royals +1.5
The Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday, with Game 3 scheduled to take place at 8:10 PM Eastern.
Each team has managed to pick up a win in the series, with Kansas City emerging victorious in Game 1 before L.A. picked up a 9-5 victory on Tuesday. That stretch brings the Royals’ record to 70-56, good enough for second place in the AL Central, while the Angels sit at 54-72.
There are a few interesting factors that come into play in this matchup, resulting in our model to project another Royals victory in a high-scoring contest. Let’s take a look at what those factors are and see our MLB model’s best bet.
Los Angeles Angels
Have split series with Royals thus far
Outscored 5-3 in Game 1 on Monday before winning 9-5 in Game 2
However, own a 2-6 record in the last eight games
Poor pitching staff has been reason for losing skid over last eight games
Own 5.45 ERA (30th), 4.96 xFIP (28th), and .310 BABIP (23rd) in that stretch
Surrendering 4.56 walks and 1.39 home runs per 9 innings- both rank in bottom eight of MLB
Starting pitcher- Johnny Cueto
Owned 6.02 ERA last season- highest of career
Posted 4.76 ERA in 64.1 innings in the minor leagues
Kansas City Royals
Enter tonight as one of hottest teams in MLB
Own 5-1 record over last six games- one win over Twins, three over Reds, and one over Angels
Own +26 run differential in that six-game span
Strong hitting has been reason for sudden dominance
Own 143 wRC+ across the last six games- highest in MLB
Also rank 1st in BABIP (.376) and OPS (.891), and 4th in Strikeout rate (18.9%)
Starting pitcher- Michael Lorenzen
Due for regression- 3.68 ERA vs 4.70 xERA
Poor command (11.3% Walk rate) and high rates of contact (17.7% Strikeout rate)
What’s the Play?
Kansas City’s offense has been on a roll while Los Angeles has struggled to find a rhythm at the plate, but we agree with our model that this is a solid spot to back the over at its current total of nine.
Tonight will be Johnny Cueto’s first start this season, and it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which it goes well. The 38-year-old didn’t put up great numbers in the minors, and is coming off a 2023 season that him saw post the highest ERA of his career. That was largely due to the boatloads of contact he surrendered, most of which was on the barrel (10.6% Barrel rate) and in the air (34.2% Ground Ball rate).
Cueto being on the mound should enable the Royals offense to continue its hot streak, but we wouldn’t be surpised to see the Angels tag Michael Lorenzen for some runs either. The right-hander owns an xERA that is 1.02 runs higher than his real ERA, and his lack of command is going to put runners on base.
Both teams will have plenty of opportunities to score here. As a result, we’ll back the over.
The Play: Over 9 (-110)

News Around the League
🤕 Orioles place Eflin on IL with shoulder inflammation. The Baltimore Orioles have placed starter Zach Eflin on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Eflin, who has been impressive since joining the team, will be replaced by rookie left-hander Cade Povich, with hopes that Eflin will return in September. Despite a growing list of injured pitchers, including Eflin, the Orioles are still competitive, holding a 74-53 record and now lead the Yankees by half a game in the AL East.
🐻 Cubs release reliever Hector Neris. The Chicago Cubs released reliever Héctor Neris, who had saved 17 games with a 3.89 ERA this season. The move was done to avoid triggering a player option for 2025, but Neris, a veteran with a career 3.29 ERA and 106 saves, can still join another team before August 31 to be eligible for the postseason. The Cubs promoted right-hander Jack Neely, acquired in a July trade, to replace Neris on the roster.

Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Rollie Fingers (Rich Pilling/MLB Photo)
Anyone know what has happened on August 21st throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.
On August 21st…
1931- New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth becomes the first player in MLB history to reach 600 career home runs in a 11-7 victory over the St. Louis Browns. No one would join The Babe on the list for nearly 40 more years, that is until Willie McCovey launched his 600th homer in 1969. Ruth would end his career with 714 home runs, the third-most in MLB history behind only Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron.
1982- Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Rollie Fingers becomes to the first pitcher in MLB history to reach 300 career saves. Fingers reached the milestone by pitching the final two innings in a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners, but surrendered a two-run homer in the ninth inning to ruin the shutout. He would retire from the MLB a few years later in 1985 with 341 saves, ranking Fingers 15th on the all-time saves list.
2020- American golfer Scottie Scheffler becomes the 12th golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot 59. Scheffler achieved the feat in the second round of the Northern Trust Open at TPC Boston, recording four birdies on the final five holes. However, Scheffler would finish the event in fifth place at 17-under par, 13 strokes behind Dustin Johnson (-30).
