Today’s Model Predictions

Featured Matchup🎰
Philadelphia Phillies @ Baltimore Orioles
Model Predicts- Orioles ML, OVER 8.5, Phillies +1.5
The Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles will continue their three-game series on Saturday, with Game 2 scheduled to take place at 4:05 PM Eastern.
Philadelphia got the better of Baltimore on Friday, posting a 5-3 victory in extra innings. The win was the 47th for the Phillies this season, giving them a 47-22 record, while the loss pushed the Orioles’ record to 45-24.
Our model projects Baltimore to have a bounce back game this afternoon to even up the series, but we are focused on the total in this matchup. Let’s take a look at why that is.
Philadelphia Phillies
Took down Baltimore in Game 1 of series
Defeated Orioles 5-3 in 11 innings. Three of five runs came after 9th inning
Now own 7-4 record since June 1st
Offense has been mediocre against right-handers in June, but solid for season
Starting pitcher- Taijuan Walker
Pitching close to expectations- 5.40 ERA vs 5.76 xERA
Ranks in bottom 10% of MLB in Ground Ball rate (33.8%), Hard Hit Rate (48.1%), and Barrel rate (14.3%)
Baltimore Orioles
Last night’s loss was second in a row, but still in midst of hot streak
Lost 6-3 to Braves on Thursday before last night’s loss
Still 6-2 in last eight games
Offense is crushing right-handed pitching this month
Starting pitcher- Grayson Rodriguez
Having solid season thus far- 3.27 ERA vs 3.52 xERA
Fly balls have been common- ranks in bottom 15% of MLB in ground ball rate (35.3%)
What’s the Play?
Baltimore has a significant advantage on the mound this afternoon, but we agree with our model that both the Orioles and Phillies will score often today and push this total over 8.5.
Taijuan Walker has been horrible this season, and things are likely going to get worse today against an elite Orioles offense. As previously mentioned, Baltimore has jumped all over right-handed pitchers this month, and Walker is going to give them plenty of pitches to hit as he ranks in the bottom 4% of MLB in Whiff rate. Opponents are seeing the ball well out of his hand, and his vulnerability to barrel contact means we will likely see the Orioles launch several balls into the stands today.
Rodriguez is a much more reliable arm, but he has posted a 3.51 ERA across his last four starts and surrendered seven hits in two of those appearances. Philadelphia likely won’t do tons of damage, but a top-10 offense against righties can still force similar numbers to what we’ve seen from Rodriguez in that span. That should lead to a high-scoring game.
The Play: Over 8.5 (-115)

🤕 Braves place Michael Harris on IL with hamstring injury. Atlanta Braves' leadoff hitter Michael Harris II is headed to the 10-day injured list after experiencing tightness in his left hamstring during Friday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Harris felt discomfort while advancing to third base following Ozzie Albies' double, prompting manager Brian Snitker and trainer Jeff Stevenson to remove him from the game. J.P. Martínez replaced Harris and scored on Marcell Ozuna's three-run homer, while the Braves plan to conduct imaging tests on Harris and seek new options for center field.
😬 Astros release Jose Abreu after poor start to season. The Houston Astros released first baseman José Abreu, who had over $30 million remaining on his contract, due to his ongoing struggles and poor performance. General manager Dana Brown explained that despite efforts to help Abreu improve, it was time for a change, and veteran Jon Singleton is expected to take over at first base. Abreu, who had been struggling since the start of the season, ended his Astros tenure with a disappointing .217/.275/.351 slash line, 20 home runs, and 97 RBIs over 176 games.

Today’s trivia requires you to dig into multiple pockets of your brain, testing your knowledge of recent events as well as those that happened decades ago.
See how many of the below questions you can get correct. Answers are provided at the end of the newsletter.
Question #1- The MLB has seen plenty of consistent hitters since its creation, but none have been more consistent than one, who hit .366 for his career. Who is that player?
Question #2- The Duke Blue Devils are known to attract some of world’s top basketball talent. As a result, Duke has had the most players of any school selected with the No.1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. How many Blue Devils have been selected first overall?
Question #3- Cleveland Browns fans have been subject to some bad football over the years, seeing their team pile on losing season after losing season. Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs (Chuck Rydlewski/WireImage)
Anyone know what has happened on June 15th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.
On June 15th…
1958- American Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs is born in Omaha, Nebraska. Boggs played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays in his career, earning 12 All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves, and one World Series Championship (1996). He was most known for his consistency at the plate, batting .328 for his entire career with 3,010 hits.
2001- The Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA title, defeating the 76ers 4-1 in a best-of-seven series. Philadelphia won Game 1 of the series 107-101 in overtime, the same game where Allen Iverson’s infamous step-over on Tyronn Lue occurred, but would go on to lose the next four games by an average margin of 10 points. Shaquille O’Neal was named Finals MVP, averaging 33.0 points, 15.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 3.4 blocks per game in the series.
2019- The Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans make a trade that would change the trajectory of both franchises. New Orleans sent Anthony Davis to Los Angeles in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and three first round picks. Davis and Ingram both remain with their respective teams, but Lonzo Ball is now a member of the Chicago Bulls and Josh Hart a member of the New York Knicks.
