Featured Matchup🎰

Kansas City Royals @ Minnesota Twins
Model Predicts- Twins ML, OVER 7.5, Royals +1.5

The Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins will continue their four-game series on Wednesday night, squaring off in Game 3 at 7:40 PM Eastern.

Minnesota has had the upper hand in the series thus far, taking home wins in both Games 1 and 2. Those victories have pushed Minnesota’s season record to 30-24 and moved the Twins into third place in the AL Central, while the losses now make Kansas City 34-22 on the season.

Our model gives Minnesota a slight edge to win tonight’s game, but it sees much more value on the total in this matchup. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Kansas City Royals
  • Enter tonight on three-game losing streak

    • One loss to Rays, two losses to Twins

    • Held to two runs or less in two of three games. Own -6 run differential in that span

  • Still one of best offensive teams in May despite recent struggles

    • Rank 8th in wRC+ (108), 1st in BABIP (.316), and 2nd in OPS (.751)

  • Starting pitcher- Seth Lugo

    • Solid start to season, but due for regression- Owns 7-1 record, but has 1.74 ERA vs 3.74 xERA

    • Ranks in bottom 38% in ground ball rate (40.3%) and Barrel rate (9.2%)

Minnesota Twins
  • Have yet to have much trouble in series with Royals

    • Won Game 1 6-5, Game 2 4-2

    • Have now won six of last seven games

  • One of MLB’s top offenses over the last seven games

    • Rank 3rd in wRC+ (123), 5th in OPS (.777), and 6th in strikeout rate (20.5%)

    • Home runs have played large factor in success- 10 homers in last seven games

  • Starting pitcher- Bailey Ober

    • Has been hit around recently- Surrendered 12 hits, seven earned runs, and two home runs over last 9.0 innings

    • Lack of ground balls and high barrel rate are a concern- Ranks in bottom 4% of MLB in ground ball rate (28.8%) and owns 9.4% Barrel rate

What’s the Play?

Both Kansas City and Minnesota have played solid baseball recently, and as a result we are going to back our model’s prediction of a high-scoring game tonight.

Lugo and Ober each have two flaws that can lead to runs, and those flaws are their inability to keep balls on the ground and their vulnerability to the barrel. As previously mentioned, that has enabled opponents to score seven runs and hit two homers against Ober in the last 9.0 innings, and although it hasn’t affected Lugo’s ERA, he has still surrendered four homers over his last five starts and is due to see the 2.00-run gap between his real ERA and xERA close.

These are two of the best offenses in baseball right now going head-to-head against pitchers that haven’t done much to keep the baseball on the ground. As a result, we should expect plenty of ducks on the pond for both teams, enabling this total to go above 7.5 runs.

The Play: Over 7.5 (-110)

News Around the League

📖 MLB adds Negro League stats to record book. Josh Gibson became Major League Baseball's career leader in batting average with .372 after the inclusion of Negro Leagues records, surpassing Ty Cobb's .367. This adjustment also established Gibson as the career leader in slugging percentage and OPS, and his .466 average for the 1943 season became the new season standard. The MLB's recognition of the Negro Leagues aimed to preserve their history and contributions, with a committee led by John Thorn incorporating these records into MLB's official statistics database, affecting numerous records and player statistics.

🤕 Giants lose LaMonte Wade Jr. for several weeks. Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. will miss at least four weeks due to a left hamstring strain, which he re-aggravated after a hard slide into second base on Monday. Wade, who has been batting .333 with two home runs this season, was placed on the 10-day injured list, and Wilmer Flores and Trenton Brooks are expected to fill in for him at first base. Brooks, called up from Triple-A Sacramento, will make his major league debut against the Philadelphia Phillies, while Flores has been struggling with a .214 average and one home run through 45 games.

Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay (USA Today)

Anyone know what has happened on May 29th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On May 29th…

1938- NBA legend Jerry West is born in Chelyan, West Virginia. West played his entire career for the Los Angeles Lakers, winning an NBA title in 1972. West also became the only player in NBA history to win a Finals MVP despite being on the losing team, winning the award in its first year (1969) in a Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.

1989- Philadelphia Phillies and MLB legend Mike Schmidt retires from baseball at the age of 39. Schmidt played his entire career for the Phillies from 1972-1989, becoming a three-time MVP (1980, 1981, 1986), 12-time All-Star, and a World Series Champion and MVP in 1980. Schmidt was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.

2010- Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay becomes the 20th pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game, doing so in a 1-0 victory over the Florida Marlins.
