Today’s Model Predictions

Two NBA games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for both matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Indiana Pacers @ New York Knicks
Model Predicts- Knicks ML, OVER 207.5, Pacers +3.5

The Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks will face off for the final time this season, squaring off in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

New York entered Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead, but came up way short of taking out the Pacers in six games, losing 116-103. That loss made the Knicks 0-3 on the road in the series, but luckily for New York it is a perfect 3-0 at home in this semifinal and 5-1 on its home court in the postseason.

Winning on the road has a been challenge in this series, and our model expects that to remain the case today. However, it still projects the Pacers to keep things close. Let’s dive into why that is.

Indiana Pacers
  • Kept season alive in Game 6

    • Won 116-103. Outscored Knicks by 10 points in first half, three in second half

    • +13.3 Net Rating in game

  • Have yet to win in Madison Square Garden

    • Lost Games 1, 2, and 5. Own -43 point differential in that span

    • Getting crushed defensively- 131.0 Defensive Rating, allowing Knicks to shoot 52.0% overall and 42.0% from three

  • Injuries- Benedict Mathurin is OUT

New York Knicks
  • Dominating while on home court in playoffs

    • 5-1 record in six games. +7.7 Net Rating

    • Averaging 115.5 points per game at home compared to 104.5 on road

  • Defense is still filled with holes, and has chance to get worst

    • Rank 14th in Defensive Rating in playoffs (118.9). Has risen to 120.9 in series with Pacers

    • Most vulnerable on perimeter- Opponents shooting 39.2% from three in postseason (16th)

  • Dealing with loads of injuries- OG Anunoby and Josh Hart are questionable. Mitchell Robinson, Julius Randle, Charlie Brown, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Duane Washington are OUT

What’s the Play?

Winning games outright on the road has been a challenge for the Pacers in the playoffs, but agree with our model that Indiana is in position to cover the spread this afternoon.

The largest advantage that Indiana has is health, as injuries keep on piling up for New York. In addition to all the players that have already missed time, Josh Hart is now on the injury report with an abdominal injury, one that forced him to play just 30 minutes in Game 6. If he does indeed sit this one out, then New York will be without its leading rebounder, and if Anunoby continues to sit then the Knicks’ perimeter defense will continue to be vulnerable to the three-pointer. Even if both play, it is unclear how effective either will be against an elite Pacers offense that loves to play fast.

Indiana has done a tremendous job offensively in this series, scoring a whopping 120.9 points per 100 possessions while shooting over 40% from three. The Pacers haven’t done much of any thing on the road, but the injuries New York has on its hands is likely enough to reverse that trend.

The Play: Pacers +3.5 (-110)

News Around the League

💪 Mavericks make second half comeback to send Thunder home. P.J. Washington Jr. hit two free throws and intentionally missed a third with 2.5 seconds left, securing the Dallas Mavericks a 117-116 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder and a spot in the Western Conference finals. Luka Doncic, with his fourth triple-double this postseason, set up Washington for the critical free throws after a foul by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Mavericks overcame a 17-point deficit in the third quarter, with Kyrie Irving contributing to the win and advancing Dallas to face either Denver or Minnesota in the next round.

🤕 Hart, Anunoby attempting to play in Game 7 despite injuries. New York Knicks forwards Josh Hart and OG Anunoby are aiming to play in Game 7 against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday despite their injuries. Hart, who exited Game 6 with an abdomen injury, and Anunoby, sidelined since Game 2 with a hamstring strain, are both listed as questionable but will attempt to participate in shootaround. Both players have been crucial for the Knicks, with Hart averaging 14.9 points and a team-best 11.8 rebounds per game, and Anunoby contributing 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds, leading the team to a 26-5 record when he is in the lineup.

On This Day in History🗓

Former New York Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on May 19th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On May 19th…

1986- Former NBA player Mario Chalmers is born in Anchorage, Alaska. Chalmers stormed onto the basketball scene during his time at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, where he earned the attention of several major college programs. Chalmers would eventually take his talents to the University of Kansas, leading the Jayhawks to a national title in 2008, and would go on to play in the NBA from 2008-18.

2019- Brooks Koepka wins the PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park. Koepka led wire-to-wire to win the tournament, and took down No.1 ranked golfer Dustin Johnson by two strokes despite posting five bogeys on the final seven holes. The victory also gave Kopeka his fourth major title, and back-to-back wins at the PGA Championship after winning in 2018.

2021- New York Yankees pitcher Corey Kluber throws a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Texas Rangers. It took Kluber just 101 pitches to record the necessary 27 outs, walking just one batter along the way while striking out nine. It was the sixth no-hitter thrown in the 2021 season, and the 12th no-hitter in Yankees history.
