Featured Matchup🎰

North Carolina Tar Heels @ Clemson Tigers
Model Predicts- North Carolina ML, UNDER 59, North Carolina +7.5

The North Carolina Tar Heels will hit the road for the first time in November to take on the Clemson Tigers.

The Tar Heels enter this week’s matchup as the 20th ranked team in the nation, most recently defeating Duke by two points in overtime. Meanwhile, Clemson is unranked and owns a 6-4 record, but is 2-0 in November and could be turning things around.

It’s rare to see an unranked team favored over a ranked one, and our model thinks that is a slight miscalculation as it predicts North Carolina to win today. Let’s take a look at why that is.

North Carolina Tar Heels
  • Haven’t played great football in last four weeks

    • Losses to Virginia and Georgia Tech. Wins against Campbell and Duke

  • Still have one of best offenses in nation

    • Rank 3rd in yards per game (520.6) and 10th in yards per play, per cfbstats

    • Extremely explosive- 36 plays of 40+ yards, 16 plays of 50+ yards

    • Led by QB Drake Maye- likely top-2 NFL Draft pick

  • Defense has some work to do

    • Allow 5.42 yards per play, hold opponents to 42% success rate

Clemson Tigers
  • Found momentum during two-game win streak

    • Beat Notre Dame and Georgia Tech

    • Put up 465 yards last week, but were out-gained by Notre Dame

  • Offense is still bad despite recent success

    • Rank 82nd in FBS in yard per play. Outside top 50 in pass and rush yards per game

    • 46% success rate on all downs. Drops to 32% on passing downs

  • Luckily, defense is elite

    • Rank in top-6 in opponent yards per play and yards per game

    • Create havoc play (deflection, TFL, turnover) on 22.8% of snaps

What’s the Play?

Clemson has an elite defense at its disposal, but there are still too many questions on offense to make us believe the Tigers can win this game by more than a touchdown.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is considered to be the second-best QB in college football behind Caleb Williams, a big reason why the Tar Heels are such a threat in the pass game. His arm allows UNC to get the down field fast and pick up chunk yardage, as evidenced by North Carolina’s top-four receivers all averaging at least 11 yards per reception.

Clemson can’t match that production on offense, and its defense is going to face its toughest challenge yet. We don’t see the Tigers winning this game by more than a touchdown, and think Clemson’s recent success is being overvalued here.

The Play: North Carolina +7.5 (-110)

News Around the League

👋 Michigan fires linebackers coach during NCAA investigation. Michigan has abruptly fired linebackers coach Chris Partridge following his lack of cooperation with the NCAA investigation. The university, initially seeking due process in the investigation, shifted its stance due to evidence obtained during NCAA interviews, resulting in Partridge's dismissal and a change in the institution's perspective on the matter. Despite Michigan's silence on Partridge's connection to allegations regarding former staffer Connor Stalions' actions, the sudden change in the university's approach hints at a significant shift in their handling of the ongoing situation.

🤫 Dan Campbell silences Texas A&M rumors. Lions head coach Dan Campbell emphasized his commitment to his current position, and has declined an opportunity to consider coaching his alma mater, Texas A&M, following Jimbo Fisher's recent firing. Despite potential contact regarding the head-coaching position at A&M, Campbell prefers to support them in other capacities and is content leading the Lions. Campbell will now prepare the Lions for a game against the Chicago Bears, aiming for their best 10-game start since 1962.

After a loaded Friday night slate, the NBA has given us just six games today. Our model’s predictions for all 12 matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Minnesota Timberwolves @ New Orleans Pelicans
Model Predicts- Timberwolves ML, UNDER 221, Timberwolves -6
The Minnesota Timberwolves wills end a five-game road trip on Saturday, with the final stop coming in New Orleans to take on the Pelicans.

Minnesota enters tonight’s matchup with a stellar 8-3 record, in large part because the Timberwolves have won seven of eight games in November. Meanwhile, New Orleans sits at just 6-6, but has picked up wins over the Mavericks and Nuggets this week.

Injuries and a back-to-back make this tough challenge for the Pelicans, and our model expects the Timberwolves to walk away with a win and cover the spread. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Elite defense has played large role in early success

    • Rank 1st in Defensive Rating (105.7)

    • Opponents shooting 43.4% overall and 33.3% from three

  • Interior defense is hardest part for opponents to crack

    • Holding opponents to 43.1 points per game in the paint

    • Opponents shooting 59.3% from less than 5 feet from the basket. 40.3% when 5-9 feet from the basket

  • Top-heavy in terms of scoring

    • Rank 14th in bench points per game

    • Two players average 21 points or more. Everyone else averages 13 points or less

New Orleans Pelicans
  • Big win over Nuggets last night

    • Won 115-110. Shot 52% overall and 52% from three

    • Bad scoring splits- 69 points in first half, 46 points in second half

  • Offensive struggles have led to slow start

    • Rank 23rd in Offensive Rating (109.8)

    • Shooting 46.5% overall

  • Depth impacted by injuries

    • No CJ McCollum (collapsed lung)

    • Rank 23rd in bench points per game (29.4), but have averaged 40.0 points from bench over last two games

What’s the Play?

New Orleans is starting to figure things out without CJ McCollum in the lineup, which is an encouraging sign moving forward. However, we agree with our model that Minnesota has the chance to win big tonight.

Closing out games has been a struggle for the Pelicans, who rank 27th n second half points per game. We saw that occur last night against Denver, a game we saw New Orleans nearly blow a 22-point lead. The Timberwolves are elite on the defensive end, and that defensive presence will likely wear out the Pelicans as the night goes on, so seeing a second-half struggle for the Pelicans is in the cards.

This is a bad spot for New Orleans given their injuries and schedule. We’ll take the TWolves because of that.

The Play: Timberwolves -6 (-110)

News Around the League

🤕 Marcus Smart out 3-5 weeks. Memphis Grizzlies' guard Marcus Smart will be sidelined for three to five weeks due to a left foot sprain. Smart's absence adds to the challenges faced by the Grizzlies, especially with Ja Morant already out, impacting a team struggling with a 2-9 record this season. Acquired in a trade involving Kristaps Porzingis, Smart averaged 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and five assists, despite shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 29.5 percent from three in 11 games.

☀️ Beal out at least three weeks with back injury. Phoenix Suns' guard Bradley Beal will sit out for at least the next three weeks due to an ongoing lower back strain, prolonging his challenges since joining the team. The Suns mentioned in a statement that his condition will be reassessed after this three-week period, but his absence may extend further. Beal's averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season, but his injuries have disrupted the Suns' plans for their star-studded lineup.

The victory was the third consecutive for Toronto, with Ilya Samsonov making 27 saves.

🐆 Ekblad, Montour back in lineup for Panthers. Florida Panthers' defensemen Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour returned to play their first game of the season last night against the Ducks. Both players were sidelined after recovering from shoulder surgeries, but helped lead the Panthers to a 2-1 win. Both players missed the preseason and the initial 16 games of the campaign following their surgeries in June, but now give the Panthers a much-needed presence on the blue line moving forward.
