Today’s Model Predictions

Three NHL games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all three matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Minnesota Wild
Model Predicts- Penguins ML, UNDER 6, Wild +1.5

The Pittsburgh Penguins will hit the road for a short two-game road trip on Friday night, with the first stop coming in Minnesota to take on the Wild.

Pittsburgh enters tonight’s matchup with a 23-17-7 record, but two consecutive wins over the Canadiens and Jets shows the Penguins have momentum on their side. Meanwhile, Minnesota owns a 22-23-5 record and sits in 7th place in the Central division.

Our model doesn’t show much of an edge for either team or on the total in tonight’s game, but we agree with our model that this is a solid spot to back the under. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Enter tonight on two-game win streak

    • Wins over Canadiens and Jets

    • +4 goal differential in that time

  • Defense has been great in last six games

    • Have held opponents to 2.17 goals per game in that time

    • Shutout the Kraken and Jets in that six-game stretch

  • Expected goalie- Tristan Jarry

    • .924 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 9th in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +11.0

Minnesota Wild
  • Coming off win against the Blackhawks

    • Won game 2-1. Held Chicago to 21 shots on goal

  • Offense has been a struggle

    • Ranks 31st in xGF/60 in 5-on-5 situations (2.24)

    • Generate fourth-fewest high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes in 5-on-5

    • Have been held to two goals in three straight games

  • Expected goalie- Marc-Andre Fleury

    • .926 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 77th in GSAx (-7.7)

What’s the Play?

As mentioned earlier, we think the best angle for this matchup is to back the under, despite our model making it a coin flip bet.

Minnesota’s scoring attack has consistently been one of the worst in NHL, largely because the Wild do not generate many high0danger scoring chances. That lack of pressure has started to lead to low scoring contests, and that is likely in store again as Jarry has proven he can stop most pucks that come his way.

The Wild have not seen a total eclipse the five goal mark in three consecutive games, while Pittsburgh has only seen a total great than five goals in one of its last seven games. We’ll back those trends to continue tonight.

The Play: Under 6 (-110)

News Around the League

🤕 Sergachev out indefinitely with leg injury. Mikhail Sergachev sustained a serious leg injury earlier this week, requiring surgery to stabilize fractures in his left leg. The defenseman's unfortunate collision with Alexis Lafreniere forced him to exit the game on a stretcher, marking another setback after missing 17 games due to a previous injury. Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper acknowledged the severity of the situation, anticipating Sergachev's absence for a significant portion of the regular season.

💪 Konecny, Flyers hand Jets fifth straight loss. Travis Konecny showcased a dynamic performance in the first period, earning a "Gordie Howe hat trick" with a goal, an assist, and a fight, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 win over the struggling Winnipeg Jets. Despite his individual achievements, Konecny emphasized the team's victory as the most important outcome. Morgan Frost, Ryan Poehling, and Tyson Foerster also contributed goals for the Flyers, who have rebounded with two consecutive wins following a five-game losing streak.

On This Day in History🗓

Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas (NBA.com)

Anyone know what has happened on February 9th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On February 9th…

1951- The St. Louis Browns sign legendary pitcher Satchel Paige to a contract. At the time of the signing Paige was 45 years old, and he would go on to post a 3-4 record and 4.79 ERA in his first season with the team. He would play for the Browns from 1951-53, becoming an All-Star in the 1952 and 1953 seasons.

1980- Houston Rockets guard Rick Barry knocks down eight three-pointers in a single game. At the time Barry set the NBA record, which would stand for the next ten years. The 1980 season would be the last of Barry’s career, where he would shoot a career-best 33.0% from three.

1986- The 36th NBA All-Star games is held at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas. As per usual, the game was a high-scoring affair, with the Eastern Conference taking the win by a score of 139-132. Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas was named MVP of the game.
