On This Day in History🗓

Former University of Kentucky basketball star Anthony Davis (Charlie Neibergall/AP Photo)

Anyone know what has happened on June 28th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On June 28th…

1939- The New York Yankees defeat the Philadelphia Athletics in both games of a double-header, winning Game 1 23-2 and Game 2 10-0. The two blowout victories came as a result of the Yankees hitting 13 home runs in that two-game span, helping propel New York to a stellar 48-13 record through 61 games. The performance was also some foreshadowing of what would come later in the season, with the Yankees being crowned World Series champions after sweeping the Cincinnati Reds.

1992- The United States defeats Cuba in an exhibition basketball game by a final score of 136-57. That U.S. team would later be known as the “Dream Team”, which consisted of several Hall of Fame players, including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Charles Barkley. The Dream Team would run over everyone they faced later that summer in the Olympics, beating opponents by an average of 43.8 points per game on its way to a gold medal.

2012- The New Orleans Pelicans select Anthony Davis with the No.1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Davis was the No.1 ranked recruit coming out of high school, taking his talents to the University of Kentucky before entering the NBA. While at Kentucky Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and an incredible 4.7 blocks per game, leading the charge for a Wildcats team that would later defeat Kansas in the national championship. Davis is currently a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, where he has won one NBA title.
