Today’s Model Predictions

After a slow Monday of NBA basketball, the NBA has given us 10 games to look at today. Our model’s predictions for all ten matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Orlando Magic @ Brooklyn Nets
Model Predicts- Magic ML, UNDER 218.5, Magic +2

The Orlando Magic will hit the road for the first of four games, making a stop in Brooklyn, New York to take on the Nets.

Orlando enters tonight’s matchup with a 5-4 record, with the Magic most recently defeating the Milwaukee Bucks by 15 the last time they were on the court. Brooklyn is in a similar position, owning a 5-5 record and picking up a win against a struggling L.A. Clippers squad.

Our model believes the Magic have a slight edge in tonight’s matchup, but it is showing far more value on the total in this spot. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Orlando Magic
  • Improvements on defense have been key to solid start

  • Team is young, but has tons of scoring depth

    • Six guys average at least 11.4 points per game

    • Rank 10th in bench points per game (43.0)

  • Dealing with several injuries to impact players

    • Markelle Fultz, Wendell carter Jr., and Gary Harris all listed as OUT

Brooklyn Nets
  • Have found themselves in several close games this season

  • In many close games because of defensive presence

    • Holding opponents to shooting 33.2% from three and 45.2% overall

    • Allow just 48.2 points per game in the paint- 12th fewest in NBA

    • Have surrendered 102.67 points per game over last three games

  • Another young team that is loaded with depth

    • Rank 5th in bench points per game (42.0)

    • Six players that average double-digits

    • Will be without top-scorer Cam Thomas tonight (26.9 points per game)

What’s the Play?

Brooklyn’s inability to create much separation from its opponent makes Orlando +2.5 an intriguing play, but we agree with our model that the under is the best prediction for this matchup.

Both Orlando and Brooklyn are great when it comes to defending at both levels, often making things difficult in the paint and on the perimeter. Additionally, both will be without essential scoring contributors tonight, with the Nets missing 26.9 points from the absence of Cam Thomas, and Orlando missing 28.8 points between the loss of Fultz, Carter, and Harris.

Combine the injuries and stellar defense with the fact that Orlando and Brooklyn each rank in the bottom half of the NBA in Pace, and you have a recipe for a low-scoring contest.

The Play: Under 218.5 (-110)

News Around the League

💰️ Mike Malone signs extension with Nuggets. Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone has reportedly agreed to a lucrative contract extension, becoming one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches. The extension will add an additional two years to Malones current contract, keeping him in Denver through the 2026-27 season. Malone is now the league's fourth-longest-tenured coach, has been instrumental in elevating the Nuggets from lottery struggles to a title, boasting an impressive regular-season record of 375-272 and a playoff record of 37-31.

🤕 Jae Crowder to undergo groin surgery. Milwaukee Bucks forward Jae Crowder will undergo surgery to repair a groin injury, sidelining him for approximately eight weeks, following an injury sustained in Saturday's loss to the Orlando Magic. Crowder's absence presents a challenge for the struggling Bucks, currently 5-4, as they adapt to the recent addition of All-Star guard Damian Lillard. With averages of 8.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists this season, Crowder's minutes are expected to be filled by Bobby Portis and Pat Connaughton in the interim.

Today’s Model Predictions

The NHL schedule gets back on track today, giving us nine total games to bet on. Our model’s predictions for all nine matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Anaheim Ducks @ Nashville Predators
Model Predicts- Predators ML, OVER 6, Ducks +1.5

The Anaheim Ducks and Nashville Predators will go head-to-head on Tuesday in what should be a tightly-contested Western Conference battle.

Anaheim, a team that has surprised the NHL early on, enters tonight’s matchup with a solid 8-6 record and having won seven of its last nine games. Meanwhile, Nashville sits at just 5-9 after falling short in five of its last six games.

Despite the struggles, our model gives Nashville a slight edge here, but expects both the Ducks and Predators to find the back of the net often. Let’s dive into why that is.

Anaheim Ducks
  • Have won many games because of defense

    • Rank 10th in GA/60 in 5-on-5 situations (2.14). Massive improvement from 3.20 GA/60 in 5-on-5 a season ago

  • However, defense is due for massive amount of regression

    • xGA/60 in 5-on-5 comes in at 2.86- 7th highest in NHL

    • Surrender ninth-most high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes (HDCF/60) in 5-on-5 situations with 12.56

    • Allow 32.6 shots on goal per game

  • Expected goalie- John Gibson

    • Owns .949 Save % in 5-on-5 situations

    • Ranks 12th in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +4.6

Nashville Predators
  • Team hasn’t scored often, but that should start to change

    • GF/60 in 5-on-5 sits at 2.23, compared to xGF/60 in same situations coming in at 2.83

    • Generate tons of pressure on opposing goaltenders- Rank 9th in HDCF/60 in 5-on-5

  • Defense has been shredded this month. Can’t kill penalties

    • Have allowed 23 goals in five games since November 1st. Rank 27th in xGA/60

    • Allowed goal on 26.3% of power plays in that time. Rank as 31st penalty kill for season

  • Expected goalie- Juuse Saros

    • Owns .914 Save % in 5-on-5 situations

    • Ranks 71st out of 73 in GSAx (-6.2)

What’s the Play?

On the surface Anaheim looks like a good defense, but the underlying metrics show that the Ducks have been getting lucky for most of the season. Combine that with Nashville’s recent defensive struggles, and its likely we see a high-scoring game.

Saros has been one of the more reliable goaltenders in recent years, even ranking first in GSAx last season. He has since done a complete 180 and now ranks in the bottom three in that category, which gives a Ducks offense that has scored at least three goals in eight of its last nine outings a good chance to light up the scoreboard again.

Let’s not count out Nashville though, as the Predators’ ability to put pressure on net will eventually lead to goals like their advanced metrics state.

Our model gives the over a massive edge here at its current total of 6. We won’t pass that up.

The Play: Over 6 (-120)

On This Day in History🗓

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula (Miami Dolphins)

Anyone know what has happened on November 14th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On November 14th…

1964- Detroit Red Wings start Gordie Howe sets the NHL record for career goals. Howe scored the record-breaking goal in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, giving him 627 for his career. He would end his career with 801 goals, the third-most in NHL history.

1993- Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula sets the NFL record for most wins by a head coach. The record-breaking victory came following a 19-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, giving Shula 325 wins for his career. Shula would extend his win total to 347 before retiring, which remains the most in NFL history.

2018- New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom wins the NL Cy Young award. deGrom finished the season with an MLB-leading 1.70 ERA, and his 10 wins were the fewest for a Cy Young winner in a non-shortened season. He would go on to win the Cy Young award again in 2019, beating out Hyun-Jin Ryu and Max Scherzer.
