Today’s Model Predictions

The NBA In-Season Tournament is back, with nine tournament games scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all nine matchups are below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Los Angeles Clippers @ Dallas Mavericks
Model Predicts- Mavericks ML, UNDER 235, Mavericks -1

The Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks will square off in Game 2 of the In-Season Tournament on Friday night.

L.A. enters tonight’s matchup with a 3-4 record and on a three-game losing skid following the acquisition of James Harden. Meanwhile, Dallas sits at a stellar 6-2 and in second place in the Western Conference.

The James Harden experiment has gotten off to a poor start, and our model thinks the Clippers’ struggles will continue tonight. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Los Angeles Clippers
  • Can tell the team has yet to adjust to Harden

    • Rank last in NBA in Offensive Rating (97.4) since Harden trade

    • Rating was 117.4 before trade. 4th best in NBA

  • Surprisingly, three-point shooting has disappeared

    • Lost some shooting ability in Harden trade: Batum, Covington

    • Shooting 27.3% from three with Harden on roster

  • Defensive has still been tough to crack

    • Rank 10th in Defensive Rating with Harden. Ranked 10th without him

Dallas Mavericks
  • Offense has proven to be elite

  • Three-point shooting has been difference maker

    • Rank 1st in three-point % (39.7%)

    • Have three players shooting above 40% from three. Grant Williams shooting 52.9%

  • Defense need some work

What’s the Play?

Between Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook, the Clippers have the ability to explode at any moment offensively. However, we have yet to see things click between the four stars, so we will roll with the Mavericks here.

The key in this matchup is the disparity in three-point shooting. Dallas is lighting it up form deep this season and isn’t relying on one guy to do it, while the Clippers are shooting below 30% from three with Harden on the roster and have a bunch of scorers that operate in the mid-range.

Dallas is poor defensively, but this team is built to trade baskets and simply outlast its opponent offensively. We’ll take the Mavs on the money line.

The Play: Mavericks ML (-115)

📜 Kane’s list of teams becoming smaller. The pool of potential teams pursuing Patrick Kane appears to be narrowing down to approximately four, with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings joining the fray, according to TSN's Chris Johnston. The Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers, previously reported as interested, remain in contention for the unrestricted free-agent winger as well. While Kane concluded the 2022-23 season with the Rangers, a reunion in New York faces financial constraints, whereas Detroit owns the sixth-most projected cap space in the NHL.

🤕 Jarry tabbed as day-to-day with eye injury. Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry is listed as day-to-day due to swelling around his right eye. The swelling stems from a collision with Anaheim Ducks forward Adam Henrique during a 2-0 win on Tuesday. Magnus Hellberg, who concluded the combined shutout in Jarry's absence, will start against the Los Angeles Kings, with Joel Blomqvist serving as the backup after being recalled from the Penguins' AHL affiliate.
