Today’s Model Predictions

There is one NFL game scheduled to take place today, with that game featuring the Bills and Broncos in Buffalo, New York. Our model’s predictions for that matchup can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Denver Broncos @ Buffalo Bills
Model Predicts- Bills ML, UNDER 47, Bills -7

The Denver Broncos will make the trip east to Buffalo, New York this week to take on the Bills on Monday Night Football.

Denver enters tonight’s matchup two games below .500, but entered the bye week last week riding a two-game win streak. Meanwhile, Buffalo sits at 5-4 but has struggled to find much traction, last winning consecutive games in Weeks 3 and 4.

Denver coming off a bye is helpful in this spot, but our model still has tons of confidence in Buffalo despite the Bills’ recent struggles. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Denver Broncos
  • Bye week last week. On two-game win streak

    • Beat Packers 19-17, Chiefs 24-9

  • Defense has improved after rough start to season

    • Have allowed average of 203.5 pass yards per game during win streak

    • Opponents are 9-24 on third down over last two weeks

  • However, defense is still bad by many metrics

    • Rank 32nd in opponent yards per play (6.3). Rises to 7.5 on road

    • Rank 32nd in opponent EPA/play and dropback success rate

Buffalo Bills
  • Have played ugly football since Week 5

    • 2-3 overall in that time. -4 point differential

  • Injuries on defense are partially to blame

    • Micah Hyde, Tre’Davious White, and Matt Milano all sidelined

    • Group now ranks 26th in opponent yards per play

    • Have allowed 23.7 points per game over last three games. Up from 17.8 for season

  • Offense needs to get turnovers under control

    • Average 1.6 turnovers per game

    • Josh Allen has thrown one interception in five straight games

What’s the Play?

The Buffalo Bills are a train wreck at the moment, but we think this is a good spot to back the Bills when we can grab them at a touchdown.

Denver’s defense has improved and many of its stats are ruined from one blowout loss to Miami, but even the recent improvement should be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, they played Patrick Mahomes twice in the last five weeks, but the Broncos also went up against Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, and Jordan Love in that time, all of whom rank in the bottom ten across many metrics.

Additionally, Denver still ranks 32nd in pass rush win rate and run stop win rate, per ESPN, so Allen will have plenty of time to dissect what is in front of him and Buffalo will have a chance to establish the run game. That should help open up this offense and lead to plenty of scoring.

The Play: Bills -7 (-110)

News Around the League

💪 Murray leads Cardinals to win in first game of season. After recovering from a right ACL tear that sidelined him for 11 months, Kyler Murray made a triumphant return as the Cardinals quarterback, leading the team to a 25-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Despite some ups and downs, Murray showcased his mobility and confidence, contributing 249 passing yards, 33 rushing yards, and a crucial touchdown in the win. The Cardinals' second victory of the season marked a positive start for Murray as the team looks ahead to a crucial stretch that could impact his future with the franchise.

🙁 McCaffrey TD streak comes to an end. Christian McCaffrey narrowly missed breaking the NFL record for consecutive games with at least one touchdown, as he re-entered the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in an attempt to score in an 18th straight game. McCaffrey couldn't secure a pass on fourth-and-goal from the Jacksonville 5-yard line that would have set the record, but the San Francisco 49ers still won the game 34-3. McCaffrey, who last failed to score a touchdown in a game on November 27, 2022, still played a massive role in the win, finishing the game with 95 rushing yards and 47 receiving yards.

Today’s Model Predictions

A slow day of NBA basketball is upon us, as just four games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all four matchups are below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Sacramento Kings
Model Predicts- Cavaliers ML, OVER 221, Cavaliers -2.5

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ West Coast road trip will continue on Monday, with the next stop coming in Sacramento to take on the Kings.

Cleveland is 1-1 on its current trip out West, suffering a loss to the Thunder before going to the Bay Area to defeat the Warriors. The Cavaliers now sit at 4-5 on the season, while Sacramento enters tonight at 4-4.

Cleveland and Sacramento were both playoff teams last season, but neither one has reached that level early on in the 2023 season. However, our model projects the Cavs to get the train back on the tracks tonight. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Despite all the firepower, this offense has been one of worst in NBA

    • Rank 25th in Offensive Rating (108.7)

    • Three-point struggles are concerning- shooting 32.6% as team from three

  • Defense has some great qualities

  • Finally starting to get healthy

    • Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, and Donovan Mitchell all missed time this season, but all available tonight

Sacramento Kings
  • Offense has been just as bad as Cleveland’s early on

    • Own 108.8 Offensive Rating. Down from 118.6 a season ago

    • Rank 29th in FG % (43.7%) and 27th in 3PT % (31.7%)

  • Key scorer is still sidelined with injury

    • De’Aaron Fox is doubtful- averaging 31.3 points per game this season

    • Owned 116.4 Offensive Rating with Fox. Has fallen to 103.8 without him

What’s the Play?

The absence of De’Aaron Fox has cratered this Kings team early on, and we agree with our model that those struggles will likely continue today against Cleveland.

One thing that Cleveland has in its advantage is health. Both teams have been bad offensively, but the Cavaliers still have their most lethal scorer, Donovan Mitchell, in the lineup, while Sacramento has yet to see anyone step up in the absence of Fox.

Sacramento has more depth off the bench, but its missing the firepower up top to keep up with Cleveland. As a result, we’ll back the Cavs on the spread.

The Play: Cavaliers -2.5 (-110)

News Around the League

🍔 Maxey drops 50 burger in win over Pacers. Tyrese Maxey achieved a career-high 50 points on Sunday, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to their eighth consecutive win with a 137-126 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Maxey lit up the Pacers defense from just about everywhere, shooting 62.5% overall and 63.6% from three. Joel Embiid contributed 37 points and 13 rebounds alongside Maxey, helping the 76ers improve to an 8-1 record, marking their best nine-game start since opening 10-0 in 2000-01.

😬 Clippers fall to 0-5 since trading for James Harden. Desmond Bane scored 27 points as the Memphis Grizzlies secured their second win of the season, defeating the struggling LA Clippers 105-101. Despite being without All-Star guard Ja Morant, who is serving a 25-game suspension, the Grizzlies improved to 2-8 with both victories coming on the road. Paul George led the Clippers with 26 points, but it wasn't enough as Memphis outscored them in the first quarter, setting the tone with seven 3-pointers and never relinquishing the lead.

👋 Oilers fire coaches after slow start. The Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant coach Dave Manson amid a disappointing 3-9-1 start to the season. Kris Knoblauch, former head coach of the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate Hartford Wolfpack, was promptly hired as Woodcroft's replacement. Oilers' general manager Ken Holland cited the team's poor performance as the reason for the swift coaching change, emphasizing the urgency to make a surge in the season.

⭐️ Stars beat Wild for 10th win of season. Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston each scored two goals as the Dallas Stars defeated the Minnesota Wild 8-3 on Sunday. The Stars capitalized on a struggling Wild penalty-kill unit, scoring five power-play goals on six chances and setting a franchise record. The Wild, now on a three-game losing streak, allowed the most power-play goals in a game in their history, and the game marked the first meeting between the teams since Dallas eliminated Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs last spring.
