Today’s Model Predictions

After just two games yesterday, the NBA has given us an 11-game slate to end the week. Our model’s predictions for all 11 matchups are below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Houston Rockets @ Los Angeles Clippers
Model Predicts- Rockets ML, OVER 218.5, Rockets +8

The Houston Rockets will kick off a three-game road trip on Friday night, with the first stop coming in Los Angeles to take on the Clippers.

Houston has taken the NBA by storm to begin the 2023-24 season, entering tonight’s matchup with a 6-3 record and riding a six-game win streak. Meanwhile, the Clippers have been arguably the most disappointing team, entering tonight at 3-7.

Los Angeles has yet to win a game since trading for James Harden. Obviously that will change at some point, but our model does not think that will be tonight. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Houston Rockets
  • Have made complete 180 from last season

  • Defense has been massive for team’s success

    • Signed Dillon Brooks in offseason, which has been big help

    • Rank 4th in Defensive Rating (108.1)

    • Opponents shooting just 45.4% overall and 32.2% from three

  • Small issue with scoring depth

    • All starters average at least 12.3 points per game, but bench ranks 24th in points per game

Los Angeles Clippers
  • Have yet to win game with James Harden

    • Lost to Knicks, Nets, Mavericks, Grizzlies and Nuggets

    • Were 3-2 before making trade

  • Horrible showing on both ends of floor with Harden on roster

    • Defensive Rating before Harden was 105.8, after is 118.5

    • Offensive Rating before Harden was 117.4, after is 108.2

  • Getting crushed in the paint

    • Surrendering 52.0 points per game in the paint over last three games

    • Mason Plumlee is still sidelined

What’s the Play?

The Clippers are going to eventually find the win column, but to be eight-point favorites against a team that has proven to be better than L.A. is a crazy line.

Houston has done everything well this season, so much so that the team’s +5.1 Net Rating ranks sixth in the NBA. Houston is also trending in an upward direction and clearly has its issues figured out after an 0-3 start, while the Clippers have blown up on both ends of the floor with Harden on the roster.

Our model thinks the Rockets win this game outright. We wouldn’t mind sprinkling the money line, but we’d prefer to just back them on the spread.

The Play: Rockets +8 (-110)

News Around the League

⭐️ Butler shines in win over Brooklyn. The Miami Heat emerged victorious against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, largely thanks to Jimmy Butler's explosive performance, scoring 36 points. The game initially appeared evenly matched, with the Nets demonstrating a fluid half-court offense without Ben Simmons, who was sidelined due to a lower back injury. However, Miami's dominance grew evident toward halftime, capitalizing on a pivotal 14-0 run and Brooklyn's weaker transition offense without Simmons, leading to their victory.

🔥 Isaiah Joe’s hot shooting leads to Thunder victory. Isaiah Joe's flawless 7-for-7 3-point shooting, alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 24 points and seven assists, contributed significantly to the Thunder's win, sending the Warriors to their fifth consecutive loss. Oklahoma City's balanced lineup showcased their depth and skill, leaving the short-handed Warriors struggling, missing key players like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Gary Payton II due to various injuries and suspensions. The Thunder now own an 8-4 record, good enough for fifth in the West.

On This Day in History🗓

Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on November 17th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On November 17th…

1959- San Francisco Giants legend Willie McCovey wins the NL Rookie of the Year award. He won the award despite only suiting up for 52 games, recording 13 homers and 38 RBIs in that time. McCovey would end his 22-year career with 521 home runs and 1555 RBIs, landing him in the Hall of Fame.

1984- Golden State Warriors star Purvis Short scores a career-high 59 points against the New Jersey Nets. However, Short and the Warriors would come up well short of the win, losing 124-110. Short, drafted fifth overall by Golden State in 1978, had a productive NBA career, averaging 17.3 points per game across 13 seasons.

1997- Mario Lemieux is officially inducted into the Hall of Fame. Lemieux was the heart and soul of the Pittsburgh Penguins for 14 season before retiring in 1997, and he would eventually come back to play for Pittsburgh again from 2000-2006. He ended his Hall of Fame career with 1,723 points, the eighth-most in NHL history.
