Featured Matchup🎰

New York Mets @ St. Louis Cardinals
Model Predicts- Mets ML, OVER 8, Mets +1.5

The New York Mets will continue their six-game road trip on Monday, beginning the week in St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Cardinals in a three-game series.

New York enters tonight’s matchup in a slight slump, losing three consecutive games to the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend. Luckily for the Mets, the Cardinals are in a similar position, losing three of their last four, including two out of three games against the lowly Chicago White Sox in their weekend series.

Neither one of these teams has shown much promise in the early season, but our model projects the Mets to pick up a win today as an underdog in what should be a high-scoring game. Let’s take a look at why that is.

New York Mets
  • Enter this series after being swept by Tampa Bay Rays

    • Lost 7-6 in extra innings yesterday

    • -5 run differential in series. Never lost by more than two runs

  • Performed well against right-handed pitching vs Rays

    • 104 wRC+ and .292 BABIP in three games. Lines up with season trends (11th in wRC+, .277 BABIP, 20.6% K rate)

    • All 15 runs scored in series came against right-handed pitchers

    • Face Kyle Gibson this afternoon (right-handed)

  • Starting pitcher- Sean Manaea

    • Due to see steep regression- 3.07 ERA vs 4.75 xERA

    • Walks are problem, can’t keep ball on ground- Ranks in bottom 10% in walk rate (14.1%) and ground ball rate (32.1%)

St. Louis Cardinals
  • Off to slow start in month of May

    • Own 1-3 record through four games, including two losses to White Sox

    • -5 run differential. Held to one run in two games

  • Have been bad against left-handed pitching overall, but doing some things well

    • Rank in bottom three in wRC+ (71) and BABIP (.216)

    • However, own 10.6% walk rate and 18.4% strikeout rate- top 10 in both categories

  • Starting pitcher- Kyle Gibson

    • Has allowed three earned runs in last 19.0 innings, but owns 3.79 ERA vs 5.55 xERA

    • Not striking hitters out often (19.1% K rate) and getting barreled up (11.1% Barrel rate)

What’s the Play?

Our model only shows a slight edge toward the over at its current total of eight runs, but we agree with our model that plenty of runs should be scored by both teams tonight.

St. Louis has been very bad against left-handers this season, but facing Sean Manaea can reverse that trend. Manaea is walking opposing hitters at an absurd 14.1% clip, a staggering spike from his career average of 6.7% (Baseball Savant). His inability to find the strike zone has allowed 34 opposing batters to get on base across his last 18.1 innings, numbers that point towards a Cardinals team that generates walks and few strikeouts against lefties to doing some damage.

We should expect New York’s offense to get going tonight as well. Gibson is a prime candidate for regression, as the 1.76-run gap between his ERA and xERA indicates, and his inability to keep balls off the barrel can cause runs to come across the plate in bunches. New York has already homered four times in three games against St. Louis this season, and the Mets are in position to add to those numbers.

Once again, our model isn’t showing a ton of value on the over, but we still think its worth a swing.

The Play: Over 8 (-120)

News Around the League

💥 Ohtani uses power to lead Dodgers to sweep of Braves. Shohei Ohtani had a standout performance, going 4 for 4 with two home runs, as the Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves, completing a sweep of the three-game series. Ohtani's first homer, a two-run shot, came off Max Fried in the first inning, followed by two singles in the third and sixth innings, and another solo homer in the eighth off A.J. Minter. Ohtani now has 10 home runs for the season, tied for the most in the National League.

🤕 Wyatt Langford out several weeks with hamstring injury. Texas Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford will be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained right hamstring, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Bochy mentioned that Langford's injury is more severe than initially thought, likely a Grade 2 strain, and expects him to be out for three to four weeks. Langford sustained the injury while running out a ground ball in a game against the Kansas City Royals, and Travis Jankowski is expected to take over in left field during Langford's absence.

On This Day in History🗓

Former MLB pitcher Kerry Wood (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on May 6th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On May 6th…

1982- Seattle Mariners pitcher Gaylord Perry records his 300th career win. The performance came in a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees, one in which Perry pitched all nine innings and surrendered nine hits while striking out four. He became the 15th pitcher in MLB history to win 300 games, and ended his career with 314.

1998- Kerry Wood strikes out 20 batters in a single game. Wood also allowed just one hit and zero walks in the game, which was only the fifth start of his MLB career. The 20 strikeouts tied an MLB record, which he now holds alongside Roger Clemens and Max Scherzer.

2019- Pablo Sandoval records a home run, stolen base, and scoreless inning in the same game. The performance came in a 12-4 Giants loss against the Cincinnati Reds, one in which saw Sandoval take the mound due to a depleted bullpen. It was only the second time in MLB history a player did all three in the same game, with the first being Christy Mathewson in 1905.
