Today’s Model Predictions

Three NHL games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all three matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Detroit Red Wings @ Florida Panthers
Model Predicts- Red Wings ML, UNDER 6.5, Red Wings +1.5

The Detroit Red Wings will continue a three-game road trip on Wednesday, with the next stop coming in Florida to take on the Panthers.

Detroit enters tonight’s matchup in the midst on a two-game win streak, recently defeating the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, Florida comes into this matchup on a two-game losing streak, but has won eight of its last ten matchups.

Sportsbooks make the Panthers a heavy favorite in this one, but our model forecasts a much different outcomes. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Detroit Red Wings
  • Enter tonight on two-game win streak

    • Wins over Kings and Maple Leafs

    • +4 goal differential in that time

  • Have performed at high level since new year began

    • 5-0-1 record since January 2nd

    • Rank 6th in GF/60 in 5-on-5 situations, but should expect to see regression as xGF/60 in that time sits at 2.00

  • Expected goalie- Alex Lyon

    • .935 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 15th in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +7.1

Florida Panthers
  • Enter tonight on two-game losing streak

    • Losses to Ducks and Devils

    • Outscored 9-5 in that time

  • Poor goaltending has been reason for losing skid

    • Panthers goalies own a .813 Save % in last two games

    • xGA/60 in 5-on-5 sits at stellar 1.85, so defense has played fine

  • Expected goalie- Sergei Bobrovsky

    • .915 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 18th in GSAx (+6.7)

What’s the Play?

Detroit is due for some regression on offense while Florida should begin to see some positive regression on defense, but we agree with our model that the Red Wings can at least keep this game close.

Florida has some real question marks in net at the moment, and it has hindered what has otherwise been a great defense. Bobrovsky allowed three goals to get by him on just 21 shots faced his last time out, and he has now surrendered nine goals on the last 80 shots he has seen (.888 Save %).

Meanwhile, Detroit goalie Alex Lyon has consistently been one of the best goalies this season, and has an offense in front of him that is one of the hottest in the NHL. We’ll back the team that is trending up to keep things close here.

The Play: Red Wings +1.5 (-135)

On This Day in History🗓

Former Detroit Red Wings star Steve Yzerman (NBC Sports)

Anyone know what has happened on January 17th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On January 17th…

1971- The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Super Bowl V. Baltimore entered the game as a 2.5-point favorite, but was down 13-6 at halftime before scoring ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win the game. Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley was named MVP, which to this day is the only time the Super Bowl MVP was part of the losing team.

1996- Detroit Red Wings center Steve Yzerman scores a goal in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche. The goal was the 500th goal of Yzerman’s career, making him and Gordie Howe the only players to score 500 goals for Detroit. Yzerman would end his career with 692 goals, the 10th most in NHL history.

2012- LeBron James becomes the youngest player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points. James reached the scoring milestone at just 28 years and 17 days old, breaking the previous record held by Kobe Bryant. James has now scored 39,566 points in his career, the most in NBA history.
