Featured Matchup🎰

Carolina Hurricanes @ Boston Bruins
Model Predicts- Hurricanes ML, OVER 5.5, Hurricanes +1.5

The Carolina Hurricanes will begin a four-game road trip on Tuesday, making the journey north to Boston, Massachusetts to take on the Bruins.

Carolina enters tonight’s matchup as one of the hotter teams in the NHL, posting a 4-1 record across the last five games. However, Boston is equally as hot, as the Bruins have won four consecutive games dating back to March 30th.

Boston took down Carolina in their last meeting last Thursday, but our model expects the Hurricanes to get revenge on the road tonight. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Carolina Hurricanes
  • Enter tonight having won four of last five games

    • Wins over Red Wings, Canadiens, Capitals, and Blue Jackets. Loss to Bruins

    • Three of four wins have been shutouts

  • Defense has been elite during that five-game stretch

    • Own 2.13 xGA/60 in 5-on-5 situations- 4th in NHL

    • Allowing very little pressure on net- 8.32 high-danger chances against per 60 minutes (HDCA/60) in 5-on-5. Allowing just 23.4 shots on goal per game

  • Expected goalie- Pyotr Kochetkov

    • .914 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 51st in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +0.1

Boston Bruins
  • Enter tonight on four-game win streak

    • Wins over Capitals, Predators, Hurricanes, and Panthers

    • +8 goal differential in that time

  • Team is over-performing on defense, struggling on offense during win streak

    • GA/60 in 5-on-5 situations sits at 0.64, but xGA/60 in same situations is at 2.59

    • Own 2.21 xGF/60 in 5-on-5- sign of weak scoring attack

  • Expected goalie- Jeremy Swayman

    • .930 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks third in GSAx (+17.6)

What’s the Play?

As previously mentioned, Boston picked up the win the last time these two met, but we agree with our model that this is a great spot to back Carolina.

The Hurricanes came nowhere close to beating the Bruins last week, but that doesn’t mean the performance wasn’t good. Per Natural Stat Trick, Carolina posted a 4.83 xGF in that game against just one actual goal scored, and a 2.48 xGA against four actual goals allowed. Those numbers show that the Canes fell into some bad luck on both ends of the ice, which is bound to reverse.

Meanwhile, several statistics show that Boston is due for defensive regression, and its scoring attack during its win streak has been one of the worst in the NHL. Boston may have the better goaltender, but they’ve been very lucky over the last four games, and Carolina is in a great spot to end the win streak.

The Play: Hurricanes ML (-110)

News Around the League

🤕 Sergachev to be sidelined for first round of playoffs. Mikhail Sergachev of the Tampa Bay Lightning participated in practice wearing a red non-contact jersey, marking his first practice since sustaining a leg injury. However, head coach Jon Cooper tempered expectations of Sergachev's imminent return, stating that while he is progressing, he will not be ready to play in the first round of the playoffs. The Lightning secured a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive year, with Sergachev having been sidelined since February due to a tibia and fibula fracture, following a previous foot injury that kept him out for almost two months.

San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove celebrates throwing a no-hitter with his teammates (ESPN)

Anyone know what has happened on April 9th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On April 9th…

2013- The 32nd NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship is contested between the Connecticut Huskies and Louisville Cardinals. The Huskies won the game in dominant fashion, outscoring the Cardinals 93-60 to win the game. The win gave Connecticut its eighth national title.

2021- San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove throws a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers. San Diego went into the game as the only team to never throw a no-hitter, and it was also the first no-hitter of Musgrove’s career. It took Musgrove 112 pitches to accomplish the feat, striking out ten batters and walking none along the away.

2023- Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is named the NBA’s scoring champion. Embiid led the league in points per game with 33.1, and it was the second consecutive season in which he led the league in scoring. Embiid was also the first center to win the scoring title in quite some time, as the last center to win was Shaquille O’Neal during the 1999-2000 season.
