Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (NFL.com)

Today’s Model Predictions

11 NFL games are scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for all 11 matchups can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Arizona Cardinals @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Model Predicts- Steelers ML, UNDER 41, Cardinals +6.5

The Arizona Cardinals will travel to the Steel City for a Week 13 battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Arizona’s season is all but lost, entering this afternoon’s matchup with a 2-10 record and in great position to win the Caleb Williams sweepstakes. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in quite the race for the AFC North title, winning seven of their first 11 games of the season.

Pittsburgh is a new team now that disgraced offensive coordinator Matt Canada was fired, but our model believes that Arizona can keep things close today. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Arizona Cardinals
  • Kyler Murray back- offense is seeing improvement

    • 5.3 yards per play with Murray. 4.9 without

    • Significantly better in red zone- Score TD on 71% of red zone drives. Converted on just 59% when Murray was injured

  • Defense is still horrific

    • Gave up 37 points to Rams last week

    • Most vulnerable in pass- Rank 30th in EPA/dropback

  • Some injury concern- Trey McBride and Marquise Brown questionable, but both trending toward playing

Pittsburgh Steelers
  • 400 yards last week against Bengals

    • First game without Matt Canada as OC. First time this season Pittsburgh out-gained their opponent

  • One glaring offensive flaw remains- poor execution in red zone

    • Scored 16 points last week. Nine from field goals

    • Scored 1 TD last week when inside Bengals’ 25-yard line

    • Score TD on just 43.48% of red zone drives- 28th in NFL

  • Defense is great, but missing some pieces

    • Without Cole Holcomb, Keanu Neal, and Kwon Alexander

What’s the Play?

Pittsburgh’s offense looked like it had some life last week, but we agree without model that Arizona can cover the spread in this spot.

In the grand scheme of things, Pittsburgh’s win over Cincinnati is not impressive. The Bengals were forced to start backup quarterback Jake Browning due to the injury to Joe Burrow, and the Steelers still went into the half down 7-3. Yes, Pittsburgh came out on top, but the lack of execution in the red zone is still a massive concern and will likely hinder this team’s chances of winning by a significant margin moving forward.

The spread for this game was between three and four points last week before the Steelers beat the Bengals, and it has since doubled to 6.5 on most books. That is far too large of a jump given that Kyler Murray is far better than Jake Browning, so we’ll back Arizona as an underdog today.

The Play: Cardinals +6.5 (-110)

News Around the League

🐆 Panthers get several players back on defense. The Panthers reinstated key defensive players Jaycee Horn, Jeremy Chinn, and Yetur Gross-Matos from injured reserve on Saturday. Their return, alongside the activation of Chris Wormley and Justin McCray from the practice squad, aims to bolster a defense that ranks sixth in total defense and fifth in passing defense. Gross-Matos, contributing 2.5 sacks and five quarterback hits in six games, adeptly adapted to the 3-4 defensive setup, while McCray's addition aims to fortify the offensive line, which has faced significant injuries this season.

⚡️ Patriots to start Zappe vs Chargers. Bailey Zappe is anticipated to take the starting position in the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers, supported by Malik Cunningham, recently elevated to the active roster. It's reported that Jones is unlikely to play unless unexpected circumstances arise, signaling the end of the Jones era. In his 11 games this season, Jones has completed 64.9% of passes for an average of 192.7 yards per game, registering 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Today’s Model Predictions

No NBA games are scheduled to take place today, and only five hockey games have been given to us alongside today’s NFL matchups. Our model predictions for all five of today’s games can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

San Jose Sharks @ New York Rangers
Model Predicts- Rangers ML, UNDER 6, Rangers -1.5

The San Jose Sharks will continue their six-game road trip on Sunday, with the next stop coming in New York to take on the Rangers.

San Jose enters today’s battle as the worst team in hockey, as evidenced by the Sharks’ 6-16-2 record. However, San Jose has started to turn things around, winning three of its last four games. Meanwhile, New York comes into today’s matchup with a 17-4-1 record, making the Rangers one of the strongest Stanley Cup contenders.

Our model projects the Rangers to win this game with relative ease, but we are more focused on the total than anything else in this game. Let’s take a look at why that is.

San Jose Sharks
  • Lowest-scoring team in NHL

    • Rank 32nd in GF/60 in 5-on-5 situations (1.40). That is 0.57 goals lower than next closest team

  • Fail to generate pressure on opposing goaltenders

    • Rank 32nd in shots on goal per game (24.3)

    • Rank 30th in High-Danger Scoring Chances per 60 minutes in 5-on-5 (HDCF/60)

  • Expected goalie- Mackenzie Blackwood

    • .914 Save % in 5-on-5 situations. Ranks 27th in Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with +2.2.

New York Rangers
  • Comeback win yesterday against Predators

    • Went down 3-1, scored three unanswered goals to win game

  • Defense is strongest part of team, while offense lags behind

    • Rank 7th in GA/60 in 5-on-5 (2.17)

    • Offense ranks 22nd in shots on goal per game, 20th in xGF/60 in 5-on-5 situations

  • Expected goalie- Jonathan Quick

    • .918 Save % in 5-on-5. Ranks 5th in GSAx (+8.8)

What’s the Play?

Our model only gives the under a 50.65% chance to hit at a total of six goals, but that is a bet we are going to back today.

Despite scoring six goals against the Devils last time on the ice, San Jose is horrific on the offensive end, and things will becomes much more difficult today against a stout defense like New York’s. However, goals may be hard to come by for New York as well, as an already mediocre offense is likely drained from yesterday’s comeback win.

Blackwood and Quick have been solid in net this season too, despite what Blackwood’s surface-level stats may indicate, only adding to the case of the under.

The Play: Under 6 (-115)

Relevant Betting Trends

Money Line Trends 💰
  • Boston Bruins- 16-4-3 overall this season, 8-1-1 as the home team

  • Nashville Predators- 11-12 overall this season, 6-2 in last eight games

Over/Under Trends ⬆️⬇️
  • Columbus Blue Jackets- Over is 12-12-1 this season with average total of 6.32

  • San Jose Sharks- Under is 15-7-2 this season with average total of 5.75

Puck Line Trends ➕➖
  • Colorado Avalanche- Puck line is 13-10 this season

News Around the League

🦆 Ducks beat Avalanche to end losing streak. Anaheim's rookie Leo Carlsson, drafted second overall in June, proved pivotal in ending the Ducks' eight-game losing streak by contributing a goal, an assist, and securing the shootout-winning goal against the Colorado Avalanche. John Gibson, setting a Ducks record with his 448th game as goaltender, made 34 saves, thwarting all three shootout attempts. Meanwhile, Alex Killorn notched his 200th career goal, becoming only the second player chosen in the third round or later of the 2007 draft to reach this milestone.

💪 Rangers rally late to beat Predators. The New York Rangers clinched a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators despite trailing 2-0 and 3-1 early on Saturday. Vincent Trocheck contributed a goal and two assists, while Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider, and Ryan Lindgren also scored. Despite Nashville's goals from Ryan O’Reilly, Roman Josi, and Colton Sissons, ending their six-game winning streak, the Rangers orchestrated a comeback with three consecutive goals, including Kreider's 14th of the season and Trocheck's redirection of Mika Zibanejad’s pass, ultimately securing the win.

On This Day in History🗓

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu (Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on December 3rd throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On December 3rd…

1956- Basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain makes his college basketball debut for Kansas. Chamberlain recorded 52 points and 31 rebounds in an 87-69 win over Northwestern, both of which were new school records. Wilt would play just two years at Kansas, averaging 29.9 points and 18.3 rebounds per game in 48 contests.

1983- Nebraska running back Mike Rozier wins the 49th Heisman Trophy. The honor came after Rozier rushed for 2,148 yards and 29 touchdowns in his senior season, shattering Nebraska’s previous records. Rozier was the second Cornhusker to ever win the Heisman, joining Johnny Rodgers, who won the award in 1972.

2011- LSU defeats Georgia 42-10 in the 20th SEC Championship game. It was the third time that LSU and Georgia met in the SEC Championship, and it was won after the Tigers scored 42 unanswered points after being down 10-0 in the first quarter. The win gave LSU a 13-1 record for the season, and current New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu was named the MVP.
