Featured Matchup🎰
Cincinnati Reds @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Model Predicts- Diamondbacks ML, OVER 8.5, Reds +1.5
The Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks will continue their three-game series on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 PM Eastern.
Arizona got the best of Cincinnati in Game 1, taking down the Reds 6-5 in nine innings thanks to a walk-off single by Kevin Newman. That win provides Arizona with some momentum entering tonight’s battle, as the Diamondbacks have now won two consecutive games and six of their last eight.
Both Cincinnati and Arizona enter this matchup with sub .500 records, but the Diamondbacks have been playing far better baseball as of late and our model projects that will be the case once again tonight. Let’s take a look at why that is.
Cincinnati Reds
Month of May has not been kind to Reds
Own 1-10 record since May 1st, which includes four losses to Diamondbacks
-28 run differential in that span
Offensive struggles have been reason for massive slump
Have scored just 28 total runs in last 11 games. Have been held to two runs or less in six of 11 matchups
Rank 30th in wRC+ (64), 26th in BABIP (.241), and 18th in strikeout rate (22.5%)
Starting pitcher- Hunter Green
Due for some positive regression- 3.38 ERA against 2.60 xERA
Walks and ground balls are concern- Ranks in bottom 24% in walk rate (11.0%) and ground ball rate (36.6%)
Arizona Diamondbacks
Undefeated against Reds this season
Own perfect 4-0 record after last night’s win. +8 run differential in season series
Offense has been on fire in last eight games
Starting pitcher- Slade Cecconi
Due to see positive regression just like Greene- 4.15 ERA vs 2.71 xERA
Vulnerable to lots of contact (20.2% Whiff rate, 20.3% K rate), but limits hard contact (32.2% Hard Hit rate, 87.6 mph Average Exit Velocity)
What’s the Play?
Many metrics show that both Hunter Green and Slade Cecconi are due to allow fewer runs, but we agree with our model that Cecconi and the Diamondbacks are the team to back tonight.
Hunter Greene isn’t the easiest pitcher to hit, but his lack on control always puts opposing hitters on bases. As previously mentioned, Greene’s 11.0% walk rate ranks in the bottom 24% of the MLB this season, and it is up from 9.6% a season ago while his strikeout rate is down 2.8%. We’ve seen those control issues put the Reds in some bad spots over Greene’s last two starts, with Greene walking nine batters in 10.2 innings.
As a result, there will be ducks on the pond for Arizona today, which is great news for a group that has crushed right-handed pitchers over the last eight games. The Diamondbacks could certainly get Greene into trouble early, forcing the Reds to go to a depleted bullpen that utilized six pitchers last night, which only further helps their chances to pick up another win in the season series.
Cincinnati can’t seem to figure things out at the plate, and tonight won’t be much easier. We’ll take Arizona on the money line here.
The Play: Diamondbacks ML (-120)

News Around the League
🤕 Friedl back to IL after short return. The Cincinnati Reds have placed outfielder TJ Friedl on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured left thumb. Manager David Bell anticipates Friedl will be sidelined for approximately four-to-five weeks, following an injury sustained from being hit by a pitch during Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants. In response to Friedl's absence, the Reds have called up outfielder Jacob Hurtubise to fill his spot on the active roster.
🐦 Short-handed Blue Jays take down AL East rival. The Toronto Blue Jays faced adversity with several players battling illness, but managed a significant 3-2 extra-inning victory against the American League's top team, the Baltimore Orioles. Manager John Schneider praised the team's effort, emphasizing the challenging circumstances and the need for a strong mindset. Jose Berrios played a big role in Toronto’s win, allowing just three hits and two runs in 7.0 innings.
