Featured Matchup🎰

Toronto Blue Jays @ Los Angeles Angels
Model Predicts- Angels ML, UNDER 9, Angels +1.5

The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels will continue their three-game series on Tuesday, with the first pitch for Game 2 scheduled to take place at 9:38 PM Eastern.

Toronto got the better of Los Angeles in Monday night’s matchup, picking up a much needed 4-2 victory. That win helped snap a two-game losing streak for the Blue Jays, and the loss was the third in the last four games for the Angels.

Sportsbooks make the Blue Jays a sizable favorite in tonight’s battle, but our model projects the Angels to be the team that wins tonight’s ball game. Let’s dive into why that is.

Toronto Blue Jays
  • Picked up win in Game 1 of series

    • Won game 4-2. All four runs came in third inning

    • Recorded nine hits compared to only two for L.A.

  • Struggling to find rhythm this month due to poor pitching staff

    • Starters- Own 4.24 ERA (15th), 5.47 FIP (25th), and 2.12 HR/9 innings (25th) since August 1st

    • Relievers- Own 4.31 ERA (15th), 4.87 FIP (22nd), 1.15 HR/9innings (19th), and 11.8% Walk rate (26th)

  • Starting pitcher- Kevin Gausman

    • Due for regression- 4.42 ERA vs 5.02 xERA

    • Ranks in bottom 4% of MLB in Barrel rate (11.3%), bottom 17% in Hard Hit rate (42.8%)

Los Angeles Angels
  • Have lost three of last four games

    • Two losses to Nationals, one loss to Blue Jays

    • Keeping games close- own -2 run differential in that span

  • Offense has had above-average production despite recent losses

    • Own 105 wRC+, .309 BABIP, and .719 OPS since August 1st

    • Rank 5th in on base % in August (.343) due to high walk rate (10.3%) and low strikeout rate (19.6%)

  • Starting pitcher- Carson Fulmer

    • Due for regression- 3.74 ERA vs 4.32 xERA

What’s the Play?

Los Angeles may be the underdog at home tonight, but we agree with our model that the Angels can win this game.

Kevin Gausman and Carson Fulmer are in similar positions entering this contest. Each pitcher owns an xERA that is nearly 0.60 runs higher than his real ERA, and both share similar flaws when it comes to being vulnerable to the barrel and hard contact, as both rank in the bottom 25% in Barrel and Hard Hit rate this season.

However, Los Angeles has been the stronger offense in August, as Toronto ranks 21st in wRC+ (96), 15th in BABIP (.304), 25th in OPS (.685) since the start of the month. That gives the Angels a sizable edge here, as the gap on the mound is negligible.

Our model believes the Angels should be roughly a -130 favorite in this spot, so we’ll gladly grab them at +130.

The Play: Angels ML (+130)
