Featured Matchup🎰
San Diego Padres @ Los Angeles Angels
Model Predicts- Padres ML, OVER 8.5, Angels +1.5
The San Diego Padres will continue their six-game road trip on Monday, returning to the state of California to battle the Los Angeles Angels.
San Diego saw its road trip get off to a hot start over the weekend, picking up two wins in three games against the Kansas City Royals. The Padres now own a 32-30 record for the season, good enough for second place in the NL West, while Los Angeles sits in fifth in the AL West at 21-38 following five consecutive losses.
San Diego and L.A. are trending in opposite directions for the moment, and our model projects that will continue to be the case today as it expects the Padres to pick up the win. Let’s take a look at why that is.
San Diego Padres
Won weekend series vs Kansas City
Won Game 1 11-8 and Game 2 7-3 before dropping Game 3
+6 run differential in that span
Have now won five of last seven contests
One win over Yankees, two over Marlins, and two over Royals
Bats are hot in that span- Rank 2nd in wRC+ (130), 3rd in OPS (.779), and 3rd in BABIP (.338), per FanGraphs
Making loads of contact as well- Own 13.6% strikeout rate in last seven games
Starting pitcher- Matt Waldron
Due for positive regression- Owns 4.26 ERA vs 3.53 xERA
Ranks in top 10% in Hard Hit rate (31.1%). Allowing two earned runs or less in four consecutive starts
Los Angeles Angels
Enter tonight on five-game losing streak
Two losses to Yankees, two losses to Mariners
-20 run differential in that span
Have been one of worst offenses in MLB over last 10 games
Rank 30th in wRC+ (68), 30th in BABIP (.241), 28th in OPS (.594), 26th in strikeout rate (25.2%)
Averaging 2.6 runs per game and hitting .203 as a team
Starting pitcher- Tyler Anderson
Due to see regression- 2.47 ERA vs 4.62 xERA
Sized up by opposing teams often- Ranks in bottom 20% of MLB in Barrel rate (9.9%) and Ground Ball rate (35.6%)
What’s the Play?
Many sportsbooks have the Padres listed as a -140 favorite for tonight’s game, while our model believes that price should be closer to -160. As a result, we are going to back San Diego on the money line here.
San Diego has been dominant at the plate recently, and the Padres’ success against left-handed pitching puts a guy with unfavorable splits like Tyler Anderson in a tough position. Per FanGraphs, San Diego owns a 123 wRC+ and .324 BABIP against left-handed pitchers over the last seven games, proving that this is a group that can force Anderson’s pending regression to come into play.
Meanwhile, Matt Waldron owns a 1.96 ERA over his last 23.0 innings, and many metrics show that he should continue that dominance on the mound, especially against an Angels hitting attack that has been amongst the MLB’s worst over the last two weeks. Take San Diego tonight.
The Play: Padres ML (-140)

⬇️ Tigers option Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A. The Detroit Tigers are sending first baseman Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A due to his struggles at the plate, with third baseman Justyn-Henry Malloy being promoted in his place. Torkelson, who hit .201 with four home runs and 18 RBIs this season, has not replicated his strong 2023 performance, which included 31 home runs and 94 RBIs. 🤕 Snell leaves game vs Yankees with groin tightness. San Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell exited Sunday's game against the New York Yankees in the fifth inning due to groin tightness, and will undergo an MRI on Monday. Snell was replaced mid-at-bat with the bases loaded, leading to a two-run double by Alex Verdugo off reliever Erik Miller. Snell, who has struggled this season with an 0-3 record and 8.75 ERA, expressed frustration over the injury and emphasized the importance of spring training for players' early-season performance.

Former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath (New York Jets)
Anyone know what has happened on June 3rd throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.
On June 3rd…
1943- Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath is born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Namath would go on to play collegiate football at the University of Alabama before being selected 1st overall in the 1965 AFL Draft by the New York Jets. He would lead that Jets team to a 16-7 Super Bowl victory over the Baltimore Colts in 1969, the third NFL Championship game in league history and the first to be officially called the “Super Bowl”. That win remains the Jets’ only Super Bowl victory to this day.
1983- The Philadelphia 76ers defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in four games in the 37th NBA Championship. Julius Erving and Moses Malone led Philadelphia to the No.1 overall seed in the Eastern Conference that season, ending the regular season with a tremendous 65-17 record. Malone was crowned the MVP of the Finals, averaging a much needed 23.3 points per game in order to take down Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson.
2008- Jamaican track and field star Usain Bolt sets the World Record in the 100 meter dash, running a time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Bolt would just narrowly beat the previous world record of 9.74 seconds, which was held by fellow Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell. However, Bolt’s record would only stand for one year, with Bolt going on to run 9.58 at the IAAF World Championships in 2009 to beat his previous best.
