Oakland Athletics @ Los Angeles Angels
Model Predicts- Athletics ML, OVER 9, Angels +1.5

The Oakland Athletics will begin a six-game road trip on Thursday night, making the journey to Los Angeles, California to battle the Angels in Game 1 of a four-game series.

Oakland is coming off a surprising series win over the Houston Astros, taking two of three games from their division rival. Those wins didn’t do much to the A’s position in the standings, but Oakland has now emerged victorious in five of its last seven games. Los Angeles just so happens to be on a similar run, entering tonight on a four-game win streak.

Two of the worst teams in baseball have found the win column often since the All-Star break, but our model projects the Athletics to be the team that stays hot today. Let’s take a look at why that is.

Oakland Athletics
  • Coming off series win vs Astros

    • Outscored Houston 4-0 in Game 1 and 8-2 in Game 2. Lost Game 3 8-1

    • Now 4-2 since the All-Star break

  • Have been the best offense in baseball since the All-Star break

    • Rank 1st in wRC+ (162)- next closest team is Yankees (133)

    • Also own .340 BABIP (3rd) and .920 OPS (1st)

  • Starting pitcher- Ross Stripling

    • Due for positive regression- 5.82 ERA vs 4.36 xERA

    • Ranks in top 8% of MLB in Walk rate (4.8%) and Barrel rate (4.4%)

Los Angeles Angels
  • Coming off series sweep of Mariners

    • Outscored Seattle 3-1 in Game 1, 5-1 in Game 2, and 2-1 in Game 3

    • Now 4-2 since the All-Star break

  • Offense has been poor despite recent winning stretch

    • Rank 26th in wRC+ (77), 7th in BABIP (.301), and 26th in OPS (.613)

    • 23 runs scored over last six games ranks 16th in MLB

  • Starting pitcher- Kenny Rosenberg

    • Due for regression- 6.30 ERA vs 7.23 xERA

    • Vulnerable to Barrel (12.5% Barrel rate) and hard contact (43.8% Hard Hit rate)

What’s the Play?

Sportsbooks are essentially making this game a coin flip, as both Oakland and Los Angeles are -110 on the money line. However, our model believes the Athletics should be closer to a -180 favorite, and as a result we are going to back the A’s to win this game.

Stripling and Rosenberg are due to trend in opposite directions, as Stripling owns an xERA lower than his real ERA, while Rosenberg is the opposite. That is largely due to the fact that Stripling has done a tremendous job at avoiding barrels and hard contact this season, while Rosenberg has been vulnerable to both, albeit in a small sample size.

Additionally, Oakland has had its way with L.A. recently, posting a 5-1 record and outscoring the Angels 43-18 across the last six matchups between the two teams.

The Angels’ win streak has come about due to facing one of the worst hitting teams in the league, while Oakland’s is due to being one of the best offenses league at this moment. We think Oakland is in a better position to keep its streak alive here.

The Play: Athletics ML (-110)

News Around the League

😬 White Sox on pace to tie modern era loss record. The Chicago White Sox are having their worst season in over fifty years, currently on track to match the most losses in modern baseball history. After a 10-2 loss to Texas, the White Sox have dropped ten games in a row, are fifty games under .500, and have lost 77 of their first 104 games, a feat not seen since the 1962 Mets. Despite the hardships, manager Pedro Grifol emphasizes a daily focus on winning and improving, while players like Luis Robert Jr. and Garrett Crochet become potential trade targets as the team struggles post-All-Star break.

🧹 Mets sweep Yankees in Subway Series. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Tyrone Taylor homered off Gerrit Cole, leading the New York Mets to a 12-3 victory over the Yankees, sweeping the Subway Series for the first time since 2013. Lindor hit a season-high five RBIs with his two home runs, while the Mets finished the series 4-0 against the Yankees, outscoring them 36-14 and improving their record to 29-13 after a poor start. The Yankees, struggling with a 10-22 record following a strong start, have allowed 34 home runs in 18 games this July, prompting frustration from manager Aaron Boone and highlighting the team's current difficulties.

On This Day in History🗓

Pittsburgh Pirates legend Roberto Clemente (Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on July 25th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On July 25th…

1941- Boston Red Sox pitcher Lefty Grove records his 300th career victory in a 10-6 win over the Cleveland Indians, becoming the 12th pitcher in MLB history to reach the milestone. Reaching the 300 win mark was no easy task for Grove, as he lost his previous two outings, both complete game efforts, before picking the win on his third attempt. Lefty allowed six runs and 12 hits while striking out six batters in what would be the final win of his 17-year MLB career.

1956- Pittsburgh Pirates star Roberto Clemente hits a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam to defeat the Chicago Cubs 9-8, the only recorded walk-off inside the park grand slam in MLB history. Cubs pitcher Turk Lown loaded the bases before Jim Brosnan relieved him of his duties, with Brosnan now in charge of keeping Clemente off the bases. Brosnan would throw one pitch, which Clemente scorched into left field to clear the bases before scoring himself.

2021- U.S. men’s basketball team falls to France 83-76 in the first round of the Tokyo Olympics, ending a 25-game Olympic winning streak. France closed the game on a spectacular 16-2 run, and NBA players Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert combined for 42 points as the top scorers for France. The loss dropped the United States’ all-time Olympic basketball record to 138-6, but the U.S. would redeem themselves against the same France team in the gold medal match, this time winning 87-82.
