Featured Matchup🎰

Los Angeles Lakers @ New Orleans Pelicans
Model Predicts- Pelicans ML, OVER 223.5, Pelicans -1

The NBA’s Play-In Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans scheduled to square off for the No.7 seed in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles enters tonight’s matchup fresh off posting a 47-35 record during the regular season, which included two consecutive victories over the Grizzlies and Pelicans to close things out. Meanwhile, New Orleans was slightly better than L.A. despite the recent loss to the Lakers, posting a 49-33 record during the regular season.

Not much separated these teams during the regular season, but our model believes that the Pelicans are undervalued in this spot. Let’s dive into why that is.

Los Angeles Lakers
  • Enter tonight on two-game win streak

    • Wins over Grizzlies and Pelicans. +19 point differential in that span

  • Enter tonight with some defensive concerns despite recent wins

    • Own 120.1 Defensive Rating over last four games- 26th in NBA

    • Opponents are averaging 122.5 points per game while shooting 50.6% overall and 46.8% from three (NBA.com)

  • Injuries- Christian Wood, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jalen Hood-Schifino are OUT. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are questionable

New Orleans Pelicans
  • Enter tonight off loss to this Lakers team

    • Lost game 124-108. Allowed L.A. to shoot 55% overall and 38% from three

    • -22 point differential after three quarters

  • Still enter postseason with momentum despite Lakers loss

    • Went 4-1 in final five games of regular season. Outscored opponents by at least five points in all four wins

    • +2.4 Net Rating in that five-game stretch

  • Injuries- No players on injury report

What’s the Play?

Sunday’s loss to this Lakers team may not give Pelicans bettors much confidence, but we agree with our model that this is a good spot to back New Orleans as a short home favorite.

New Orleans was in a tough spot entering Sunday, as that game was the third in four nights for the Pelicans. To make matters worse, it was the first game back home after a four-game road trip, with a short turnaround from Friday night’s game in San Francisco.

New Orleans dominated the road trip prior to its return home, posting a 4-0 record, +7.4 Net Rating, and 110.6 Defensive Rating. That is far reflective of the Pelicans’ season than Sunday’s loss, and as a result we think New Orleans can bounce back tonight as the healthier and better team.

The Play: Pelicans ML (-110)

Anyone know what has happened on April 16th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On April 16th…

1991- The St. Louis Blues defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in Game 7 of a playoff series. What made the win more remarkable is that St. Louis found itself down three games to one in the series, yet managed to win three consecutive contests to advance to the next round. The Blue were just the eighth team in NHL playoff history to win a series after being down 3-1.

2003- NBA legend Michael Jordan plays his final NBA game. Jordan’s final appearance in an NBA uniform came when the Washington Wizards visited the Philadelphia 76ers, a game Philly won 107-87. Jordan scored 15 points in the game, shooting 6-15 from the field.

2019- NFL quarterback Russell Wilson signs a four-year, $140 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks. The extension made Wilson the highest paid player in NFL history, and it included a record $65 million signing bonus. Wilson has since been traded to the Denver Broncos and later released, and is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
