Today’s Model Predictions

One NFL game is scheduled to take place today. Our model’s predictions for that matchup can be found below.

Featured Matchup🎰

Atlanta Falcons @ Philadelphia Eagles
Model Predicts- Eagles ML, UNDER 46, Falcons +5.5

The Atlanta Falcons will make the journey north to the City of Brotherly Love on Monday, taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 season’s second edition of Monday Night Football.

Atlanta enters tonight’s battle with an 0-1 record, a result of falling short to the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in Week 1. Meanwhile, Philadelphia owns a 1-0 record following a victory over the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo Brazil, the first game of the NFL’s International Series.

There are several question marks surrounding Kirk Cousins after a poor showing in Week 1, but our model thinks Cousins and the Falcons can shake off those struggles and keep the deficit manageable tonight. Let’s dive into why that is.

Atlanta Falcons
  • Lost to Steelers in Week 1

    • Lost game 18-10. Went into halftime up 10-9, but outscored 9-0 in second half

    • Recorded 226 total yards of offense- 89 rushing, 137 passing

  • Defense put together strong performance despite loss

    • Ranked top-10 in NFL in opponent EPA/play and success rate in Week 1

    • Held Steelers to 4.1 yards/play (7th) and did not surrender a touchdown. Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell made six field goals

  • Offense had some eye-opening struggles in Week 1

    • Kirk Cousins- 16/26 passing (61.5%), 1 TD, 2 INTs

    • Averaged 4.0 yards/carry, converted just two of nine third down attempts

Philadelphia Eagles
  • Beat Packers in Week 1

    • Won game 34-29. Went into halftime down 19-17, but outscored Green Bay 17-10 in second half

    • Recorded 410 yards of offense- 144 rushing, 266 passing

  • Defense struggled last season, and didn’t look strong in Week 1

    • Ranked 25th in opponent EPA/play, 32nd in yards/play (7.1)

    • Rush defense was largest liability- surrendered 163 rushing yards and 7.8 yards/carry. Ranked 25th in opponent rush success rate

  • Offense will be without key piece

    • Wide receiver AJ Brown will be OUT- recorded 119 yards and one TD in Week 1

What’s the Play?

Kirk Cousins and the Falcons offense didn’t provide much of a reason to bet on them in the coming weeks after their Week 1 showing, but we agree with our model that this is a solid spot to back Atlanta as a road underdog.

Despite Cousin’s struggles throwing the football last week, Atlanta favored the pass more than run, throwing the ball on 56% of plays. With Cousins coming off an achilles tear and not taking any snaps in preseason games, it should have been expected to see the passing game struggle, and in order to take pressure off of Cousins this week we expect the Falcons to favor the run against an Eagles run defense that is filled with holes.

Additionally, Atlanta’s defensive performance in Week 1 was amongst the NFL’s best despite finding the loss column. As previously mentioned, the Falcons did not surrender a touchdown to Pittsburgh, and five of Boswell’s six field goals came from outside the red zone, with three of those coming from beyond 50 yards. The Falcons defensive unit is strong, and should create some problems for an Eagles offense without AJ Brown.

The spread for this matchup is sort of in no man’s land at 5.5 points, but our model believes that is still a good number as it projects Philly to win by just over a field goal.

The Play: Falcons +5.5 (-110)

News Around the League

💪 Kamara’s four touchdowns leads Saints to win over Cowboys. Alvin Kamara scored four touchdowns as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Dallas Cowboys 44-19, ending Dallas' 16-game home winning streak. Derek Carr threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Saints score on their first six drives, while Rashid Shaheed contributed with a 70-yard touchdown reception. The Cowboys struggled to keep up, with Dak Prescott throwing two interceptions, despite a 65-yard touchdown from CeeDee Lamb.

🦅 AJ Brown set to be sidelined for matchup vs Falcons. Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown has been ruled out of Monday's game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a hamstring injury sustained during practice, after initially being listed as questionable. This will be Brown's first missed regular-season game since joining the Eagles in 2022, following his impressive season opener with 119 yards and a touchdown. With Johnny Wilson also questionable, the Eagles are left with just three healthy receivers: DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, and Britain Covey.

On This Day in History🗓

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (Chris Unger/Getty Images)

Anyone know what has happened on September 16th throughout history? We didn’t have a clue either, but it appears that it has been a busy day.

On September 16th…

1993- MLB legend Dave Winfield records his 3,000th career hit against the Oakland Athletics. The hit moved Winfield into 19th on the all-time list, solidifying himself as one of the greatest hitters the league has ever seen. He would end his career with 3,110 hits, ranking him 24th on the all-time list.

2000- MLB legend Sammy Sosa becomes the third player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in three consecutive seasons. Sosa joined Mark McGwire and Babe Ruth on the list, which are still the only three players to have accomplished the feat. Sosa would finish his career with 609 home runs, the ninth most all-time.

2018- Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sets an NFL record for touchdown passes thrown in the first two weeks of the season. Mahomes would throw 10 TD passes across the first two games of the 2018 season, with 4 coming against the Chargers and 6 against the Steelers. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Charley Johnson all previously shared the record with 9 TDs.
