Featured Matchup🎰

Milwaukee Brewers @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Model Predicts- Brewers ML, OVER 8, Brewers +1.5

The Milwaukee Brewers will continue their seven-game road trip on Monday evening, with the next stop coming in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to begin a four-game series with the Pirates.

Milwaukee enters tonight’s matchup fresh of a three-game series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, giving the Brewers a 14-6 record and the No.1 spot in the NL Central. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh sits at fourth in the NL Central standings with an 11-11 record following six consecutive losses at the hands of the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

The Brewers and Pirates are trending in opposite directions, and our model projects that to continue today despite Milwaukee being a road underdog. Let’s dive into why that is.

Milwaukee Brewers
  • Enter this series on four-game win streak

    • One win against Padres, three wins against Cardinals

    • Outscoring opponents 17-6 in that span despite never being better than a -120 favorite

  • Offense has become one of best groups in MLB

    • Rank third in wRC+ (120), second in BABIP (.332), per FanGraphs

    • Tons of power in lineup- 27 home runs this season (fourth in MLB), rank second in OPS (.788)

  • Starting pitcher- Joe Ross

    • Lit up in last outing- allowed nine hits and seven runs in 4.2 innings

    • Ranks in bottom 34% of MLB in strikeout and walk rate, but owns 2.1% Barrel rate and 3.23 xERA compared to 4.91 ERA

Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Enter this series on six-game losing streak

    • Three losses to Mets, three losses to Red Sox

    • -27 run differential in that span

  • Bats have gone cold during losing streak

    • Rank 29th in wRC+ (39) in last six games, while posting a 26.3% strikeout rate

    • Have been held to three runs or less in all six games, scoring just one run in four of those matchups

  • Starting pitcher- Jared Jones

    • 22-year-old that has been fantastic

      • 3.13 ERA vs 2.72 xERA. 36.4% strikeout rate and 2.3% walk rate

    • Has struggled with keeping ball on ground and eliminating hard contact- 37.7% ground ball rate is in bottom 30% of MLB. Simultaneously ranks in bottom 11% in Barrel rate (13.2%) and Hard Hit rate (49.1%)

What’s the Play?

Jared Jones has been fantastic on the mound, especially when you consider the fact the he is a 22-year-old rookie. However, we agree with our model that Milwaukee is a solid play here as an underdog.

Jones’ ability to strikeout out opposing hitters is remarkable, but his inability to keep many baseballs on the ground will likely pose challenges against this Brewers team. As previously mentioned, the Brewers are one of the best power-hitting teams in the majors early on, and they have crushed right-handed pitchers, posting a 126 wRC+, .339 BABIP, and .809 OPS (FanGraphs).

The sample size with Jones is still small, which means he still has a wider range of outcomes on the mound at this point in his career. That certainly works in Milwaukee’s favor today.

Additionally, Joe Ross has proven to be a serviceable option on the mound, and the 1.68-run gap between his ERA and xERA this season shows he is due to see improvement on the mound, which can certainly happen to day against a weak and struggling Pirates offense.

On paper Pittsburgh has the advantage on the mound, but the gap at the plate may be too much for the Pirates to overcome. We’ll take the Brewers here.

The Play: Brewers ML (+115)

Shohei Ohtani set a new record for homers by a Japanese-born player in Major League Baseball, surpassing Hideki Matsui, with a massive two-run shot in the third inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Mets 10-0. Ohtani's 423-foot blast off Adrian Houser was his fifth homer of the season and the 176th of his career. He expressed relief at achieving the milestone and acknowledged Matsui's impact on his career, jokingly aiming to surpass Dodgers manager Dave Roberts' record for Japanese-born players in a Dodgers uniform.

🤕 Angels place Rendon on IL with hamstring injury. The Los Angeles Angels placed third baseman Anthony Rendon on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, following his early exit from Saturday's game against the Cincinnati Reds after sustaining the injury on an infield single in the first inning. Rendon expressed frustration and anger, describing his hamstring as "not too great." Since signing a lucrative contract with the Angels in 2020, Rendon has faced criticism for his performance, hitting only 22 home runs in five years and dealing with multiple significant injuries, limiting him to 219 games.
